Replaygain pre-amp and battery life

Does enabling the pre-amp when using replaygain affect the battery life? I have an iPod which I listen to using an amp via the line-out, and was wondering whether I could extend the iPods battery life (and shorten the amps) by putting the pre-amp at -12dB.
