seeking advice on 120 gb hard drive for Archos jbr20 replacement
« on: July 13, 2007, 05:28:47 AM »
I want to upgrade the hard drive of my archos jbr20 to 120 gb and want advice on which hard drive to purchase. Does the following drive look appropriate, or is there another anyone would recommend? http://reviews.cnet.com/hard-drives/fujitsu-120gb-mobile-ata/4505-3186_7-31393655.html?tag=upidmlp

Thanks

No, this one looks good.

Let's see... 4200RPM... 8MB buffer... burst transfer rate of 100 Mbps...

Yep, seems to fit the bill for an MP3 player. Purchase!

Yes, that drive seems fine.  I personally use http://reviews.cnet.com/hard-drives/seagate-momentus-5400-3/4505-3186_7-31656794.html?tag=prod.txt.3 , but it is a 5400 RPM drive, so it consumes more battery than a 4200 RPM drive.

If you really want to get a top drive, search the internet for a page where people have done a battery of tests on laptop hard drive (you are looking for the power consumption test).

From what I have gathered about the speed of the hard drive, it shouldn't have an overly significant effect on the battery life. For laptops, a higher speed almost always outweighs the decrease in battery life, with a drop of less than 10% of the battery life. The effect on a digital audio player might be a bit more, since the hard drive is more likely to be in greater use, but I am not really sure how much of an effect can be expected; it's probably dependent on the power management of the disk. Still, I don't know if the faster RPM will really have any perceptible effect on the digital audio player, but that is definitely a consideration to bear in mind.

Edit: This might be of relevance (Message 5).
