Very interesting to hear (no pun intended).  I've only had an iRiver iHP-140 (now 160) and always have admired the physical sleekness of the Apple player, as well as its smooth user interface and seemingly superb color LCD (compared to the iRiver's "challenged" greyscale screen, with no real video capability).

At the same time, I like keeping in control of my player (rather than the other way around, iTunes ...) and my player has gone strong for almost 3-1/2 years now, despite exercising with it and carrying it around daily, and a few falls.  I know I'll need a replacement one day and I keep my eyes open for a good source--but I haven't seen a player that really advances in the field rather than goes forward in some areas and back in others.  (Rockbox has been the biggest advance, apart from color screens and video capability--isn't that shamefull for a DAP field with gazillion dollar companies in it?)  The closest  I've seen has been the Cowon iAudio X5.  Rumor has it that a successor to that model will be coming out in the near future (although for Cowon, products can take a long time in coming)--perhaps that will be the one?  And a new Apple player is expected this year, with Apple's latest interface capabilities (think the phone without the phone)--but then, we're back to iTunes land.

And given the Nano 2G as something to base assumptions on - it's likely the firmware on a new Apple player will be encrypted too.

As to sound quality, hook an iH140 to a real sound system (via TOS Optical link... :) ) and compare...  The difference between 128-256 and FALC etc is astounding!  Really worth the size difference.  320 is a good second choice, but I like the idea of only downloadong FLAC, etc and then down converting as need be, but get it in lossless (Open-Source) to start with.

And a question to Mikerman - How did you bump your iHP140 to 160?

Opened it up and put a new hard drive in it I'd imagine ;)

Not that tough a job either really provided you're not a *complete* clutz with a screw driver.

Funny, although I'll rip open a Cicso router or switch or any server on the planet,  I think twice about cracking open my little iRiver...  Maybe I value it more than someone else's router, etc...   :)

Okay, one last qiestion...  Now that everything is working, all I need to do to update the current s/w is to replace the contents of the .rockbox folder contents with the current build data, right?  It's that simple?

Yes, you unzip the latest build to the player root as you did on the first install.

You must do all files, however, otherwise there will be undesired effects and possible plugin failures/lock-ups etc.

Yep, I hit 40 gb and really needed extra space.  Found a 60 gb drive at a decent price and put it in.  A bit nerve-wracking to do the first time but, in the end, no more difficult than putting a purchased hard drive into a hard drive enclosure--open it up (be careful with the screws)--unplug the old--plug in the new--close it up--and format with SwissKnife.  The guides at Misticriver.net were great in that regard.

Okay, I get the idea HOWEVER...  The first time I did the unzip/install to my iRiver, it failed to name the unzip dir correctly; it named the dir without the leading dot, hence my question about being able to unzip and copy.  I would image that it will ask me and I can just tell it to go the the dot-rockbox dir, but I just wanted to check.  It's working very well and I would hate to screw the pooch for lack of understanding about this.  Computers are no sweat, but this little tune box has me "On Guard", as it were.

Thanks for everything-
