IpodStatus page still up-to-date for 5.5Gen iPod?
LambdaCalculus:
Double thanks to both the iPodLinux team and these crazy hackers on the Rockbox team for turning Mr. Jobs' schlocky little DAP into something that actually is WORTH using. ;)
And Mr. Jobs should at least appreciate the sales he's getting; I would not have given the iPod a second look had it not been for Rockbox.

I can see that good people made considerable progreess under adverse circumstances and I too would like to give thanks and credit. I am asking these questions not to nit-pick but because I want to buy a high storage-capacity MP3/OGG player, and the iPod Video with Rockbox (I refuse to run i-Tunes) looks like an ideal candidate.
Nevertheless, the iPod Video is still pricey (> $300) and I want to be absolutely sure that it Rockbox will work smoothly on it before I invest that kind of money. I only care about storage, look-up, and audio-playback of high quality (160 - 192 Kbps) MP3 and OGG files - I do not intend to use any other features or plug-ins.
So I can live with "Remote Control doesn't work" and "No click sound played when click wheel is used" and even "UI sometimes becomes sluggish", but I don't know about skipping while playing certain files and I'm especially concerned by "occasional freezes". I already tried RB out on an iPod Photo and found this to be a recuring and annoying problem.
I'd also like to know what exactly is meant by "Battery life is significantly less than [that achieved by] the Apple firmware". The Twiki page IpodRuntime lists the iPod Video as running 10 hrs under Rockbox. This seems sufficient to meet my needs. Is there something else I might need to know about?
I would appreciate any help I can get from anyone to answer these questions. Thanks, and G-d bless.

I've been using Rockbox on a 60gb 5g for more than a year now with practically no problems. At this point, skipping is never an issue, the way I use it. (Same goes for a 30gb 5.5g I borrowed for a few months.)
Battery life IS kinda a problem for me though; however, if you're cool with ~10hrs then I suppose you'll be fine.
(I also bought it solely because of Rockbox.)
mamboman:
The battery life with rockbox is about half of what i get with apple's firmware, but i am sure in time, the wizards here will get the problem licked :)

That's really helpful, and give me confidence to invest in a iPod 5G or 5.5G. Thanks!
BTW - What is the difference between a 5G and 5.5G? The Wiki has a reference to a page on Apple's site that is supposed to make this clear, but it didn't for me.
