Nimbus-16 Font: Does it exist?
« on: July 10, 2007, 05:15:14 AM »
Hi,

I have looked all over trying to find this Nimbus font in 16pt size.  Rockbox has Nimbus-14 and -19, but there is a large gap between these two sizes.  I would be happy with 16 or even 17.  Can anyone help me out?

Thanks, CK

I actually made a Nimbus-16 quite a while back (don't use it any more though). Latin-1 only, but it should save you some work. I can add it later (read: tomorrow).

It would be interesting to see; since I got my player 3-1/2 years ago, a bigger font would be nice.

I forgot to mention that the glyphs aren't really bigger. Compared to Nimbus 14 (and Nimbus 12 too, I think), the gap between the lines is bigger. Accented chars don't need to be reduced in height to make room for the accent though.

All in all, the font is very similar to a font available on the iPod...

Well I have looked into making a nimbus 16 font myself, but I still can't seem to find the font in the right format to transfer to .fnt type.  If anyone has this font in 16, it would be great if you could upload it for us to use.  Thanks, CK

Nimbus Sans is one of the type 1 fonts donated to the Open Source/Free Software community by URW:

http://www.urwpp.de/english/home.html

It is very easy to find and download it from the Internet. Google is your friend:

http://www.google.com/search?q=nimbus%20sans%20download&hl=en&lr=

Your just need to follow the directions in the Wiki to make a fnt font out off it.

So is the original somehow available to us, so that it could be included for distribution in every integer font size from say 6pt to 24pt?

Or at least so that I could build it for my own use...

The font on that page looks different from the rockbox nimbus fonts - from what I can see in the preview.

Nimbus is not jut one font- It is a family of fonts. The Nimbus fonts (among other type faces) that URW donated are Nimbus Roman no. 9, Nimbus Sans and Nimbus Mono.

You will need to make your own- Nimbus Sans is distributed as a type 1 (postscript) font. It is part of the standard Ghostscript fonts. Here is a link to download the font pack:

http://mirror3.cs.wisc.edu/pub/mirrors/ghost/GPL/current/ghostscript-fonts-std-8.11.tar.gz

Thanks for that cpchan. I'll run it through Font Converter and see what I get.

However, I somehow missed out the point I was really trying to make:

Is this the exact same original that the project posesses, especially with respect to licensing, so that I could freely re-distribute my new .fnt files with, for instance, a WPS?
