Hide rockbox menu items
« on: July 09, 2007, 12:35:40 PM »
I'm wondering if there's a way to hide menu options like 'Files' and 'Recording' from the Rockbox main menu. I scanned the manual and also searched the forums, but I'm unable to find anything like this.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Not without editing the source and recompile.

This may be an option that could be included in the 'Settings' menu. Where does one go about putting a suggestion like this for the developers to see?

Open a Feature Request in the tracker. It's on the bar on the left.

Give the request a good, descriptive name... "Customize Root Menu in Settings" would be good.

Well ...
1. there is no root menu. There is a main menu.
2. customizable menus have been discussed several times and shot down as many times. Supporting customizable menus would be a complete nightmare to support.

It is very hard to break the habit of not calling it a "Root Menu" when you come from a Unix culture ;D.  Essentially that is what it is though.

Same here. Force of habit.

But I do understand that it would be a nightmare of epic proportions if everyone suddenly could customize their menus, and then came to us for help screaming that they can't find X option, or Y selection. It's like those people that can't find the "Any" key on the keyboard.

Well, anyone *can* customize their menus. It just requires enough technical knowledge that you're understanding what you're getting into, and more specifically, what you've done (and know that you can fix it by downloading an SVN build).

Overall reordering the main menu is probably one of the less difficult tasks in Rockbox programming, and probably doesn't require a user to know C. Similar to changing button mappings, but a little bit more complex, it can be managed by reading the appropriate file.

Hail Bob,

Can't resist that one. I hope you stuck with Slackware.  ;D

Yes, I agree.

Ha, I remember that one. IIRC, that was from Compaq tech support.

He said it isn't the root menu, because the term doesn't apply.  From the way it is designed, it isn't a root menu.

How about an option called "Full Menu" at the bottom of the main menu, which reopens the main menu (as a sub menu) with all options shown.

So when u tell users to do stuff you say "Go to Full Menu>Settings>Main Settings>etc"

Support problem solved?
