Help: my flac has died
« on: July 05, 2007, 03:27:29 PM »
Hello all. First, thanks for rockbox, you folks have done a great job and made my Ipod a lot more pleasant and painless to use.

Now to my problem: .flac encoded files have started to cause my Ipod to freeze. I have a 5.5g Ipod Video 30gig with the latest build. I've tried overwriting the existing .rockbox folder with a fresh one, and I've tried wiping it entirely and starting from scratch.

My .flac files *used* to work fine. I have a ton of songs encoded in .flac and I had no problems until a couple of days ago, when they spontaneously stopped working. Now, when I try to play a .flac file the Ipod either freezes entirely, or it goes to the wps but won't play. The song's duration reads as 0:00, but every 5 seconds or so it flashes the correct duration for an instant before going back to reading 0:00.

.mp3s work fine. I haven't tried any other formats.

I hope somebody out there can suggest a fix for this, it would suck to have to go back and reencode all my songs as .mp3s. If there's any other info I can give, let me know

Regards

"The latest build" means very little. Please give an SVN revision, as we can't psychically tell when you downloaded the file, and though we could guess from the post time of this topic, it's often the case that people seem to have a different definition of "latest" than we do.

It would also help greatly if you told us what all you did between the last time .flac worked for you, and the first time it didn't.

There have been reports about instabilities on 5 and 5.5g Ipods during playback or at least while in the WPS in IRC too. At the moment they'd like to find out when exactly (meaning with which changes, respective revisions) this popped up. Until now it's been narrowed down to "between rev. 13761 and 13767", I believe. Maybe your info could help a bit?

rockbox-info.txt says the version I'm currently running is r13796-070705. The problems started while running r13667-070618. I have tried a couple of different versions, including EvilG's Fusion build, but no dice from any of them.

My .flac files stopped working over the weekend, while I was away from the computer for several days running, so it's not due to having changed anything with the files on my Ipod. I don't recall having changed any settings on the Ipod itself aside from having turned Random on.

the While-Playing screen looks like this when I try to play a file:

(root)
Various - 12 - CIV Et Tu Brute.flac
(root)

Time : 0:00 [0:00]
Composer : unknown
Genre : unknown
Year : unknown
Track : unknown (10/18)
Codec : ??? (?kbps)
File Size : 0KB
Next Song :

I don't know if this will help or not.

I get different responses from different files, even two different files encoded in the same session. Like one will show up as above, while another from the same album will say Codec: FLAC and then give the correct file size.

Further investigation has shown that there are several .mp3 files that will not play either. Sometimes, when I restart the Ipod by holding down the Menu+Select buttons I can play songs that wouldn't work before the reboot, sometimes not.

I've reloaded the songs into my Ipod but the problem persists. I can play any of these files just fine with Winamp, even playing them off my Ipod.

I updated again to version r13820-070708. Still no playback.

Any thoughts?

Disable EQ if you have it turned on (under the Sound settings). I find lossless audio tends to freeze a lot more when you have it enabled. I'm pretty sure if you do a search you'll find other posts on the same subject.

same issues here...

just uprgaded to the latest build (i think) r13870 - 070713 on a 5g 60gig/64mb ipod. flac playback was working just fine until today. now any flac file begins to play, then skips ahead to another song after about 2 or 3 seconds, and repeats the process again. it just keeps skipping to other songs, and sometimes totally stops. mp3 playback seems to be doing just fine. no eq turned on, i haven't done anything with the database at all..

this is the first trouble i've had so far, been a rockbox user for around 3 or 4 months...i love it so far!

Any build from today should end 070717 - so you're several days out of date - try a current build and see if the same thing occurs.
