Sansa 280 vs First generation iPod Nano
« on: July 05, 2007, 02:08:11 PM »
First off, I really really like RockBox and thanks to all the wonderful people that make it possible.

Currently I have an iPod, first generation, 4 gig nano.  With rockbox it has some annoying bugs.  Such as not being able to charge from the wall outlet, so I always have to use my computer.  Battery life is poor, and if I leave it alone (without the hold slider activated) then the battery drains.

Probably the biggest concern is that I can NOT use my ipod with any docking station (have to use with headphones).  The charging capacity of the docks sends it into a forever restart pattern (much like the wall charger).

Those are quite annoying, however much much better than the original Apple software.

I was wondering if the Sansa would be a better option?  I know it has more capacity, but was wondering if I would have more functionality.

Also if you know what I am doing wrong with the Nano, please let me know.  I recently did a clean, updated (re) install with the same problems.

Thanks

well it depends on what you are planning to use your player for. For example, video on the nano is much better than on the sansa (although i do fine with video on mine). It does have more space and a large screen but i'm pretty sure audio playback would be the same. the nano is probably a lot more stable than the sansa though.

Reboot into the Apple OS before you plug it into a wall charger / docking station.
Does it still reboot?
I had a nano before and my battery didn't drain with the hold switch deactivated.

First off, you are not turning it off properly. If you do a (really) long press on the play button, it does a proper shutdown and lasts for weeks if not used.

This may also contribute to your other problems, as a proper shutdown saves settings.

As for charging, I never had a wall charger with my Nano, but I had no problems with charging via USB except the annoyance of resetting afterwards.

I use a wall charger and my Nano booted into Rockbox w/o problems.
To echo gnu and bascule, I have no problems with my Nano's battery draining when left unused for long periods of time.

Imagine I said exactly what Soap just said.

Battery life isn't great, but this is known on all PortalPlayer targets, and complex accessories are pretty much out, but that's also a pretty widely known thing, but wall charging works, and the power doesn't drain while it's turned off.

I do a proper shut down each time.  Long hold of the the play pause and it does indeed shutdown.

If I do the above and do not lock the hold button (so the orange is showing) then I can expect it to be dead by the morning.

I can not charge by the wall charger.  It goes into the forever restart cycle.  I could restart with Apple and then wall charge, but I would like to use a docking station (like a JBL radial) to listen to music for the room.

It seems from this thread that the Sansa is buggier?

If you do not have a problem with wall charging or docking stations, could you please send a link to the version of RockBox?  Or a PM?

Thanks

Liver, I get this behavior on all stock builds in recent history (=as far as my old brain can remember.)
I don't think people are arguing that the Sansa is buggier, just that your problems are very atypical.

Are you using an unsupported build, Liver?

EDIT:
Ahh, looking at your post history you have been having charging issues.
I honestly think part of your problem is a hardware fault.  (Assuming your wall charger isn't to blame - try another.)

Using the latest build off the build page.

Yes, I have always had charging issues.  I will now troubleshoot the charger.  That is the common component, I have issues with two chargers.

So assuming it is the charger . . . Do you guys have any issues with http://www.jbl.com/home/products/product_detail.aspx?prod=JBLRADIALWHT&Language=ENG&Country=US&Region=USA&cat=MME&ser=RAD

that dock?
