ugh - update gone wrong
« on: July 03, 2007, 11:30:16 PM »
So I went and downloaded the latest build of rockbox to update my player and now I own a brick :(

I copied rockbox.zip to my .rockbox directory, but now I can't get past the boot screen. I just see the loading rockbox...In safe mode I even see rockbox loaded, but no dice.

Importantly I can't see the device in Windows Explorer. That would be great if I could just go back to square one with this thing.

What can I do here? I'm not even sure that the 'take it apart' trick would work on this.

Any suggestions?

The take it apart trick will work. And I have no idea what you've done to the player, because no instructions tell you to copy rockbox.zip onto the device, you're supposed to extract it onto the device. As well, copying it into the .rockbox folder alone could not cause the problem you're having.

And I have no clue what you mean by "Safe mode" either.

How recently had you last updated?  If it's been long enough, you have an old bootloader with a new Rockbox, which doesn't work.

I had the same problem this morning after updating with the latest build.  There was a memory error and it locked up.  I finally got it into Recovery mode by holding down the Menu button while I turned it on (I already had the USB cable attached).   WinXP then saw it, and I could revert back to the earlier build.

Hope this helps.

Thanks. I hope taking it apart will work, although I'm not anxious to do so... After I started having to take apart my karma it never really worked the same way. Don't really want that to happen with this.

I believe that I used a new build with an old bootloader. I tried recovery mode, but no dice. I'll have to see if it works after I leave it for a day or two.

Having this brick my player would be most unfortunate, especially since it's so easily preventable w/ some information.

And yes, I extracted the zip into the .rockbox folder as instructed... I may be an idiot, but that was not one of my shortcomings. Never knew there was a new bootloader out there. Perhaps I'll go and edit the wiki when I lose my laziness to create yet another account for something.

You don't extract the zip INTO the .rockbox folder, you extract it to the very root of your player. Even though it's an old bootloader it still has some special recovery things you may be able to save yourself from taking it apart. Maybe the manual will help or one of the devs will post something because I honestly have no idea as to what the special bootloader keys are.

Sweetness... Recovery mode got XP seeing my Gigabeat again. Thanks all. I was reaching for the screwdriver the first two times I tried.

Maybe it was the day off or probably just rebooting windows.

I have no idea why either makes a difference but at least now I can just load up a fresh .rockbox folder and start over. Phew.

O/T, but is album art enabled by default in the main build?

Congrats on gettting it working again!!

Album art is not enabled by default. It is a patch that you have to manually install and build yourself.
See this page and look at the cross compiler section first and then read about applying patches.
