funkandroid:
naw it plugs into... well i dont know what its called, the symbols like a Y. im certain its not usb

The cable that he has plugged into his ipod is a usb cable. Just that it's adapted for an ipod on one end. I'm not sure if Nano's have a usb mode specification in the original firmware or not but if they do make sure it is set. When you plug it into your computer it should show up as a drive on your mac (ex. "Iggie's Ipod" or NONAME). Just browse into it and drag and drop music files from your (presumably itunes) library into a music folder. Rockbox should play them as long as they are not DRM protected.

Yes - it is USB. Nano's do not connect using any other sort of cable. Older iPod's used to be able to use firewire - but the modern ones, including the Nano - do not.

I can confirm this is the way to do it, as mentioned - plug the usb cable in (it is a usb cable for sure), the nano will pop up as a drive in the left pane of the finder, then just use the finder to drag and drop stuff onto the nano as if it were any other portable drive. This is how I do it with my rockbox'd nano and my macs. Don't bother with trying to use itunes for this, it isn't neccessary to even go there !

thanks for all the help guys, basically i need to buy a new cable, im using my girlfriends old ipod cable and im certrain it doesnt plug into a standard usb drive. i just got the nano by itself w/o cables or charger. anyway no removable drives show up. the symbol for the port looks like a Y, it must be the firmware port you guys are referring to.
