iAudio X5L "plays" mp3 files without sound
« on: July 02, 2007, 09:03:51 AM »
I just installed Rockbox, and everything seems to be running fine, but there's no sound, not over headphones or line out.  ??? I used this bootloader from the iAudio Installation page:

Attachment  Action  Size  Date  Who  Comment
x5_fw.bin  manage  53.4 K  11 Jul 2006 - 21:07  LinusNielsenFeltzing  Bootloader v2 for iAudio X5

Any ideas??

Thanks, Regine

Try this one instead:

http://download.rockbox.org/bootloader/iaudio/

Also, check your sound settings. If you can, attach your config.cfg file so one of us can check it. You can find it in the /.rockbox folder on the root of the device.

I have the same problem with my iAudio X5.  The MP3 files 'play', but there is no sound.  There IS sound with the FM Radio.  The headphones work fine, and the radio works fine, there is only an issue playing mp3's.  I tried updating the firmware using the link in this thread, there was no change.
Here is the contents of my config.cfg file

# .cfg file created by rockbox r15034-071008 - http://www.rockbox.org

volume: 0
bass: 7
treble: 7
shuffle: on
repeat: shuffle
statusbar: off
time format: 12hour
background color: FFA049
show files: playlists
beep: weak
crossfeed: on
dithering enabled: on
tagcache_ram: on
tagcache_autoupdate: on
font: /.rockbox/fonts/uwe_prop.fnt
wps: /.rockbox/wps/S3T_005.wps
start in screen: bookmarks

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

I am having an identical problem. iAudio X5L (30GB). Installed Rockbox and everything appears to be working except one major thing - it produces no sound. I have tried line out aswell as phones jack (which I have wiggled). The earphones are functioning. The volume is to the max '6db' (I hav etried it at other end of scale aswell!). I have uninstalled and re-installed. I am at a loss. The track is playing at normal speed. The audio bars are reacting to the sound levels.  I drained the battery outright. pressed the reset button at the side. It hasn't worked. I'm really stumped. The beep volume is set to moderate but I hear nothing. I have installed the bootloader as linked to in a post on this string. Still won't work. The device functions normally in every other way. No sound with my radio either! Also when I record, even though it is set to mic it records no sound. Its really bizarre

I tried reverting to iaudio firmware but I got the same problem that prompted me to use rockbox (i.e. iaudio freezes on startup on the 'iaudio screen')

I am using rockbox version 15040M-071008
Buffer: 13.534 MB (I often get 'Dir buffer full')

I have attached config file. I notice there quiet a few posts on 'no-sound' but none that I can see with a solution that may apply to me.

My config apparently states:
# .cfg file created by rockbox r15040M-071008 - http://www.rockbox.org

volume: -12
rec format: mpa3
mp3_enc bitrate: 96

Any help appreciated.

What build are you using? It looks like you are using a modified build. Second, does the problem only occur with mp3? How about other file types?

Hi I have gone through the step by step process of manually installing the current build. It still doesn't work. Now it is freezing when I try to play any file with the statement 'loading...' frozen on the screen. The player becomes unresponsive and has to be reset.

HELP!!  :'( I have reformatted the entire player. Reinstalled the Rockbox firmware (the player still won't boot when using the iaudio firmware - it freezes on the iAudio screen). It now plays the radio but still no sound for mp3 or wma files. It displays the screen showing the music playing and the sound bars oscillate to the music but like before no sound whatsoever. It is not the earphones, the phono jack works so it must be the rockbox firmware. The player connects and the music can be played on my PC from the drive.

Also The recording function doesn't appear to work. i.e. it goes to record but does not pick up any sound and when you attempt to playback the track does not play it stays at 0 seconds despite there being 51seconds of blank recording. I haven't really configured anything but this is the file extract:

# .cfg file created by rockbox r15058-071009 - http://www.rockbox.org

volume: -18
fmr: /.rockbox/fmpresets/preset01.fmr

I also have the same problem. I had to replace the harddrive in the player.
Windows detects drive etc.. can install rockbox, but no sound (even with the fm tunner).

And when i try the original firmware, it doesn't boot (hangs on load screen).

:(

Has anyone filed a bug report on this yet?  If this problem suddenly began to occur in recent builds it will be helpful to know precisely which revision of the source code causes this problem.

I personally have not entered a bug report.

Is there some way to get an older build (maybe prior to June) so that I can see if that helps?

Also where would I find a new hard drive if it comes to that?

Thank you

Have a look at these wiki pages:
UsingSVN
SimpleGuideToCompiling

For compiling I would recommend the VMWare image:

VMwareDevelopmentPlatform.

This will allow you to check out any revision of the source code that you want to test and compile your own build.  Narrowing down when this problem started helps the developers out a lot.

You can also find daily builds for the X5 here that go back about a month: http://www.rockbox.org/dl.cgi?bin=iaudiox5.  But this only will give coarse grained information regarding which source code revision may have spawned this problem.

This rather reads like hardware issue(s). There are no problems with sound in current builds on my M5 which uses almost the same hardware and I talked today to someone with an X5 and he didn't mention anything like this. It would be better to investigate more before filing a bug report - older builds and different formats because the title is explicitely referring to mp3s.

Older builds (up to 1 month) are availble from http://www.rockbox.org/dl.cgi?bin=iaudiox5 for even older ones you would need to compile your own.

Thanks for the input, pixelma!  That does seem to indicate hardware related issues -- i.e. this problem apparently only exists for a small number of X5 users.

Just had another idea:

It would be interesting to find out if it's a plain hardware issue (something is broken in the player) or a combination of software and hardware (something's changed in Rockbox and only a few units with possibly slightly different internals are affected - like the problem with some Nanos).

In my eyes a good test would be to put the original firmware back on and see if everything's alright with playing mp3s there. Unfortunately it isn't as easy as to boot into the original firmware and back but the install process isn't that hard either.
