h340 won't start. Battery dead or software problem?
« on: July 02, 2007, 05:36:00 AM »
Hi folks!

a couple of weeks ago i forgot my charger at my friend's place. since my battery was rather bad i had to charge it like every other day. i thought i should use the original iriver firmware so i could use the usb-charger mode, but i had problems starting that when my rockbox firmware was active. so i changed the three last letters of the rockbox boot file, just so it wouldn't be recognized by the player. then bam!  >:( the battery was dead, before i could turn on the usb-charger mode!

when i got back the charger a week later i couldn't start the player. rockbox started to load, but after two seconds i could spot a "-1" for a tenth of a second, which seemed quite strange, and then it went off.

is my battery dead? or did i do something extremely stupid when i altered the boot file name?

hope someone could tell me if i should by a new battery or somehow fix the software problem!

Well, if you renamed the rockbox.iriver file this isn't strange at all -- a bootloader error -1 means that exactly that file wasn't found. If the player goes off directly afterwards I assume that the initial spinup of the disc drained that much power that the battery was simply flat enough to not have enough power left.

ok thanx!

does this mean that the original firmware should load right after, if the battery is ok?

nothing happens when i plug in the charger, and i can't make a connection to my computer, supposedly since the battery is dead.

so do you think my problems are gone if i buy a new battery?

Are you sure the charger is working?

If you leave the player on charge for a while (1-2 hours) then you should be able to turn it on (still on charge) and boot into the OF in order to re-modify the rockbox.iriver filename.

no i don't know if the charger is working, but i know that my battery had gotten much worse just the weeks before this happened. so i was thinking that when it was uncharged for a week or so it stopped working completely.

i'll try again and charge it tonight, and get back to you tomorrow. thanks a lot for your help!

It's not good for Lithium Ion batteries to be discharged completely - and if it was almost shot anyways, it might be ruined now...

Oh yes!

I plugged the charger into the player and after about an hour it woke up and started charging! But the player is very unstable, it shuts down now and then. I don't know for sure, but it seems that it happens when I touch or turn the headphone plug. I guess it's the battery...

Thanks for your tips again!
