latest compiled files for drives>160gb?
« on: June 29, 2007, 04:42:41 PM »
hi,

i have an archos JBR20 V1 with 160gb hd.

does anyone have compiled files that enable them to use the bigger hard drives that they'd be willing to share?
the one i have is from dec 06, so any later than that would be great.

thanks,

jc

Instead of relying on others, you might want to have a look at http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/SimpleGuideToCompiling

thanks for that. but as the note at the start of he guide says:

"Note: Before you begin, be aware that this process can require a decent amount of time and technical knowledge and should not be attempted by a casual user, but rather by those intending to invest time in development. "

time is the thing i'm short of. my unit works fine with the december '06 build so i'll leave it with that.

Well how hard is it to include them options in & compile the new build without any programming knowledge? Do you have to pretty much become a developer of Rockbox to know how to do this or can most people who already have gone the distance to install Rockbox deal with compiling their own build just fine?

I actually find that compiling is easy and goes quickly, even patching manually once you get it down.  What I find takes time, but only the first time, is setting up the compiling environment (e.g. Cygwin).  But again, that's only the first time.  And then it's smooth sailing all the way.

If you follow the instructions to the letter, then compiling Rockbox is easy (VMWare in my case).

Where it can get tricky is then trying to fix other people's errors, like a patch that has been diff'd from the wrong folder or is slightly out of sync and needs to be tweaked before it will apply cleanly or getting to grips with trying to do other actions under the compiling environment that are not explicilitly in the instructions.

If you are coming from Windows and you have done anything 'under the bonnet' such as writing batch files or tweaking .ini files, then you'll probably be OK.
