iPod mystery data??

I went to install Rockbox on my iPod the other day and I had to use my sister's computer (she has the OS necessary to run the bootloader).  Anyway, I hook the iPod up to the computer and get all ready to install the Bootloader when, much to my dismay, iTunes pops up.  After having a near-heart attack when iTunes attempted to "auto-sync" my iPod (which, had I left it untouched, would have consisted of deleting over 3,000 mp3s from my iPod), I started to look around the iTunes program until I located my iPod on it.  I noticed that it had a breakdown of what was on my iPod, and I thought that was pretty nifty.  So I see I have 1 GB of videos, 22 GB of audio, and 9 GB of...other?

What the hell is "other" and how did it get on my iPod?

At first I was completely perplexed, what with Apple's ingenious idea to make everything on the iPod encrypted (renaming all music/video files) I had no idea to see what "other" information was on my iPod.  I ignored it, for then, and decided to go ahead and install Rockbox.

I got Rockbox working and running beautifully on my iPod, then let it sit to gather information from the mp3s on there to build its "database" (just a way for me to sort through all of my music files using Rockbox).

After it built the database, I was happy, and all was well.  I was looking through the folders of my beautiful Rockbox capable iPod.  Then I noticed something awry with my albums.  There were musical albums on the iPod that I never uploaded.

"What???"

There were albums that were available through Rockbox on my iPod that I couldn't access using my normal iPod firmware.  Did these albums come out of nowhere???  No, of course not, I had every album on my iPod on my computer.  The problem is that A) I never transferred these albums and B) these albums were never available to me when I was using my normal iPod firmware.

Is it because I use Winamp to sync my iPod to my Winamp music library?  Has anyone ever run into this problem before?  It's really bugging the hell out of me...

It seems like *something* copied those files to your ipod while failing to update the ipod OF database on the unit. Itunes probably just reads the database and notices files not in it, noting them as "other". Since Rockbox doesn't rely on any other software to create its database, it sees everything on the disk.

This would answer problem B. I'll leave problem A to someone who has actually used Winamp or Itunes.

The above is just a guess based on what I've heard about how the ipod OF and itunes works, so it may be completely wrong. It sounds plausible to me though.

Yeah, I agree with that, I do believe that somehow the files were just transferred over, I just have absolutely no idea how they were transferred without me using Winamp to do so...
