Headphone power drain
« on: June 27, 2007, 12:52:04 AM »
Does anyone happen to know if there is output to the headphone jack if you are in the recording screen, and there is NO headphones plugged in?  I would fingure this would drain battery power.

I've split your message and gave it a new thread.
Please keep threads on topic.

And to answer your question: Yes, headphone output is on, and no, I don't think the power drain is significant if there is no load (headphone) attached.

Would there be any power drain at all? I only know basics about electronics and stuff but how could there be a power drain without a closed circuit?

I guess there will be small currents inside the headphone amplifier that play no role, that's why I said not significant ;)

The output stage of your DAC's headphone amp is a second, parallel closed circuit that dissipates some energy even if there is nothing attached.

So, can you shut it off, or will that interfere with other functionality?

There's so little power lost that it doesn't matter anyway in my opinion.

1) yes you can probably shut it off, but...
2) as I said, the power lost through it is not significant

Check the spec sheets for the Wolfson DACs and see if they allow doing that without turning off the ADC.

Sorry, but I think that is out of my league.

Thanks anyway.
