Boot Loader Can't Find iPod
« on: June 21, 2007, 01:25:08 AM »
I've downloaded the current build and extracted the .zip file into my iPod's root folder as .rockbox, and now I've downloaded the bootloader onto my computer.  When I open the bootloader, it says "[ERR]  No ipods found, aborting".

My iPod is in disk mode (I did the hold down seven buttons for 3 minutes and toggle hold switch etc..etc...) and my computer can very plainly see the iPod (I can look at files on it, I see a USB device attached on my computer) but for some reason the bootloader won't recognize it?

My OS is Windows ME.

Thank you for the help!

Ipodpatcher is not the bootloader. It is the program that installs the bootloader.

It only works on Windows 2000/XP/Vista and possibly NT, I believe (and the other non-windows OSes that are listed, of course).

Well, it opens with my computer, it just can't find the iPod...

But if that's the case, am I just "out of luck" when it comes to installing rockbox?

You could use a Linux LiveCD to run the Linux version of the installer.

Does itunes see your ipod?
Remember ipodpatcher needs ipod apple firmware to find the ipod.
Without the firmware it is just a glorified usb hard drive.  8-)

did you format your player or use Itunes to install it?
If the former the up to date ipodpatcher may not see it.
Ipodpatcher has been updated but not available for direct download.
Any one with a svn source could compile one and let you have it, perhaps someone will offer.

Does Windows ME even have USB support?

ME + 98 (and some versions of 95) had USB support, but it was pretty poor.

But whether they had USB support or not, iPodPatcher and Sansapatcher (and by extentsion RBUtil) all require an NT based variant of Windows. It's not just the USB support that's the question.

I thought ipodpatcher worked in dos, I don't think this is very different on different windows versions. Rbutil is another matter however.

You are aware that the command prompt is not the same thing as DOS, right? Windows 95, 98, and ME are DOS based, while the later Windows versions are the "NT" versions of Windows. Feel free to research further at Wikipedia.

But several people have found that Ipodpatcher will not run on the DOS based versions of Windows, and I believe it's not expected to in the first place.
