Recommended audio codec

(1/1)

I realize this post doesn't exactly fit this forum, but I didn't see a forum that it fit better.

Rockbox was appealing to me because of its ability to play any major audio codec (except WMA).  I'm looking for a fit-all codec to use both on my computer and my iPod (this way, I don't have to encode files twice).  I need excellent audio quality at a reasonible size.  Lossless is too big but AAC sounds awful on my stereo.  How do Vorbis, Muse, etc. compare?  Will I see significantly better results?  Is it worth reencoding my CDs?

Febs:
The reason that there is no forum for this type of question is because it really isn't related to Rockbox.  Try http://www.hydrogenaudio.org.  (The knowledgebase/wiki at that site has a wealth of information.)

My apologies.  I thought I'd get some input from you all, but I understand that this type of question is beyond the scope and responsabilities of the project.

I would recommend Vorbis, it has a good qualitysize ratio and overall good quality.

You will most likely have to try that yourself. However the results will largely depend on how you encode your files. If you use a too small bitrate you won't get good results with any codec.

I don't know. You didn't tell us what format you encoded them to in the first place. ;)
