3G iPod not found
MacEvansCB:
I've got a 20GB 3G iPod I would like to run Rockbox on.
I've downloaded the current software and downloaded the ipodpatcher via the link in the current manual.
After formatting the ipod with FAT32, unmounting it, and putting it into disk mode, the ipodpatcher program can't find it:
[INFO] Scanning disk devices...
[ERR] No ipods found, aborting
[ERR] Please connect your ipod and ensure it is in disk mode
[ERR] Also ensure that itunes is closed, and that your ipod is not mounted.
[ERR] Please refer to the Rockbox manual if you continue to have problems.
The iPod is connected and shows disk mode at the top of its screen.
iTunes is not running and Disk Utility shows the iPod is not mounted.
After some searching of this forum, I see that support for the 3G is spotty and that I need to run some older version of the bootloader/ipodpatcher.
Could someone please point me to a working version of ipodpatcher that will allow me to install on my 3G?
linuxstb:
How did you format it to FAT32? Did you follow the instructions on the Rockbox website?
Also, does the Apple firmware still work on your ipod?
As far as I know, the current version of ipodpatcher should work on 3G ipod.
MacEvansCB:
According to the "Convert to FAT32" page on the Rockbox site, with iPods older than 5G, one should just use the Apple Disk Utility to reformat the iPod. I did this. Then the info for the iPod disk shows that the Partition is FDISK type and the partition filesystem is FAT32. Other than that, the iPod is empty.
And, yes, I was able to reformat the iPod to Apple standard, restore it, and reload all my songs. It works fine.
I'm using the Rockbox for iPod 3G manual dated June 16, 2007.
The system the iPod is connected to is a standard dual G5 2GHz PowerMac with 2.6GB RAM and 960GB HD [4 drives]
What am I missing here??
Do I need to have some kind of iPod software in it after formatting it??

What do you mean by "the partition is FDISK" type.

That's Step d). Did you also follow steps a), b) and c) ?
After converting to FAT32, your ipod should still start up in the Apple firmware, and itunes should recognise it and be able to transfer your music to it.
If that's not the case, then you didn't successfully convert it to FAT32, and ipodpatcher won't work.
