iriver 120 fried or bootload/ software corrupted? help...
« on: June 13, 2007, 07:53:43 PM »
been a while since i posted, but everything's gone great for over a year until last night.

last night at a gig, the 120 wouldn't start up (worked fine the night before). i thought the batt was dead, but it turns out that the only way to start up is by pressing the reset button and start up. now i'm back to original Iriver screen and when turned off, the same process need be repeated.

i downloaded the latest build and reloaded that. it loaded Rockbox, it worked once, but after turning it off, it's back to the same problem as before.

something is major corrupted and not sure how to clean house/proceed from here. no recordings have been lost but any help getting Rockbox running again appreciated :)

It looks like the player does not finish turning off and stays turned on in a frozen state.
- Is the screen always completely blank when the player is "turned off"?
- Try to insert the headphones when the player is "turned off". If you hear a slight noise it is still powered.
- Try to insert the remote control for a similar check.
- What does the Rockbox bootloader write during the boot?

for a while i could get it to restart thru some random combination of reset and on button. usually the original 'iriver' screen came up and freezes, but every once in while i could get the rockbox bootloader screen up and it would feeze there. at least with that i could get a usb connection and i reloaded the rockbox file and folder, but no change.

at this point it won't even restart. it used to be blank but now there is a faint jumble of gibberish at the top. plugging in phones makes no noise unles i touch the unit, then it emits a 60 cyle hum. i don't have the remote.

It looks like a hardware problem. The thread should be probably moved to the "Repairing broken players" topic. There is also small possibility that the flash memory content is corrupted but I would be very afraid of doing the firmware/bootloader flashing in such a bad state of the player. I am sorry but I think that I cannot help more.

Regarding the headphones: I meant to plug them into the player while having them on/in the ears. If you hear a tiny noise during the plugging the player is probably powered.
The 60 Hz hum is could be audible when the power adapter (or USB) is connected.
