Why is "make" taking so long?
« on: June 13, 2007, 03:06:24 PM »
Whenever i try to make after i have downloaded the source, half or so will be compiled before i get this message:

"Warning: the file [insert path/file here] has a modification time of (example) 3e+4s in the future."

The 3e will count down to one and then finish compiling but this takes all day. Why is it taking so long?

This notice is a cygwin issue. And cygwin in know to be dog slow, especially in direct comparison to a linux box.

but i'm using vmware...

I've gathered from those posts that i should sync the two clocks and wait a few minutes after copying the files. Is that right?

I've found the best solution is to have VMWare properly shut down, rather than simply suspending, when you close it. It takes longer for VMWare to launch, but assures that the clocks are in sync (or did for me).

Ok, well i've set my preferences to shutdown the image every time i exit and i've restarted my player. It says (during the boot)  that the clock was synced with the hardware clock, but it is still not synced with the time i have set on my windows OS. Do i need to sync it with that? If so, how? I was reading through the other topics and found
Code: [Select]
hwclock --utc --systohc
do i just type this into Eterm?

System time is generally saved as UTC, but can also be saved as local time.  You need to figure out which way you have it set up and then configure VMware to use it that way.
