apple video installation
« on: June 13, 2007, 02:34:03 PM »
Hi everyone,

Just recently bought a new Ipod video.

Used to have IRiver H120 and loved it but had to part with it.

The one thing I loved about the IRiver is the "Drag and Drop" where I can do all the copying and deleting of files/songs in my Iriver trhough Windows Explorer.

You supposedly can't do this with the Ipod Video because everything has to go through Itunes in my laptop as the host computer.

My problem with this is : I want to be able to copy and delete songs in my player anywhere. With Itunes, if it doesn't recognize my laptop (as the primary host), it will delete all the songs that were previously loaded in the player. If I was in a different room and I use my daughter's computer or my computer at work, Itunes will delete all the previously loaded sobngs in the player.

I know it has something to do with the privacy and copyright etc... of songs and artitsts but I want to manage my songs better and with flexibility.

If I load Rockbox on my Ipod Video, will that allow me to add/delete files/songs like I used to do with my Iriver using "Drag and Drop" thru windows Explorer?

Appreciate your help.

You can also set your iPod to update manually in iTunes, to avoid it wiping out during sync.

Need help !!

Tried to load Rockbox bootloader but the Ipod video does not show up as a different drive.

At first, I could see it on Windows Explorere, but as soon as I connect the Ipod with the USB, Itunes would start up and the drive showing the Ipod would dissapear.

What do I do now?

Thanks for the help.

HI all !!

Before I do anything, could abyone confirm that Rockbox can work on the newest Ipod video 30gb?

If so, which build do I download, the Ipod Video or the Ipod Video 64mb?

Thanks

Here are a few things you can try:

1.  Go into Task Manager and kill and services relating to the ipod.

2.  In Device Manager, find the USB device that is your ipod and uninstall it.  Disconnect the ipod, and then let Windows find it and reinstall it.

3.  It may be that Windows is recognizing the ipod but there is some conflict preventing Windows from assigning it a drive letter.  Go into Computer Management --> Disk Management and assigned a drive letter manual to the ipod.

4.  Reboot Windows.  A fresh boot can cure a variety of Windows ills.

Hey thanks for your suggestion...

I rebooted and managed to load Rockbox and it's up and running.

Next step is to load the cool themes.

Do I download and extract them to the Rockbox root, Player root or any specific folder?

Pls. advise.

Thanks

also noticed that after plugging in Ipod player, it will appear as USB storage.

after few minutes, however, Itunes automatically startsup and it will dissapear as USB storage. because of this, I have to download and zip to the player very fast before Itunes starts up or else I have to reboot again and try to load fast before Itune starts.

any suggestions?

I believe there is a setting in iTunes for automatically starting iTunes when the iPod is connected...

I believe there is a setting in iTunes for automatically starting iTunes when the iPod is connected...

There is (as well as a setting to allow you to use your iPod as a drive (even if iTunes is running.)):

Launch iTunes.
Click on your iPod's name in the leftmost column under the heading "Devices".
A picture of your ipod will appear in the main window on your right.
Click the "Summary"  tab.
Depending on window size you may need to scroll down, but there is a checkbox titled "Open iTunes when this iPod is connected" - you want to uncheck this one.  Lower down is one titled "Enable disk use" - make sure this one is checked.
