IAUDIO M5 with larger HDD?
« on: April 09, 2007, 05:49:54 PM »
Hi!

I know it isn't possible to equip M5 with hdd > 20Gb if the iaudio firmware is used.
Is the same situation with RockBox firmare?

No, it's possible butt you need a HDD with the right interface.
The X5 uses the ATA 44-pin interface which is diffrent to the ZIF interface and I think the M5 uses the same interface.

A single platter Toshiba MK3006GAL (30GB) or MK4007GAL (if you can find one) works. I recently put an MK3006GAL in mine.

It takes the same drives as the iriver H120 and H320.

If you have an M5L you could trade the extra battery life for a 60 or 80 GB dual platter drive.

Great!!

Thanks a lot.  I've got  iaudio 5M, unfortunately.  It runs approx. 15h if battery is full. If I put dual plate hdd, how much it would decrease that period? Do you have any experience? What about replaceing battery with larger one? Is it possible?

With the X5L/M5L, you can either have a two platter drive or the extra battery: not both.  With the non-L versions, you're limited to single platter drives.

These days im thinking of putting an MK8009GAH (80GB) in my x5 60gb. But first I currently soldered my headphone-out, now I can't use a remote anymore :( but it's possible to hear music again. :)

Would the Toshiba MK4007GAL work in the Cowon IAudio M5L and allow you to have the extra battery?

Apparently there is a 60gb single platter drive available which is compat with the m5... I can't seem to find it but any make/model/where to buy references?
