Database: insert sorting order
« on: June 11, 2007, 10:38:23 AM »
I am a new Rockbox user, and I am very impressed with it (it's the reason I bought an 80gb  iPod instead of a 60gb Vision M when I recently ran out of room on my 40gb Zen Touch).

However, I am still getting accustomed to the user interface. I have read the appropriate sections of the manual(s), but perhaps I am missing something.

When I go to Database > Artist > (hold select) > Insert, and then go to view the current playlist, the songs are inserted randomly. At least, it appears random to me.

All of my albums are in directories like so:
/MP3/F/Feebles/Best_Of_The_Feebles/
/MP3/F/Feebles/Feebles_B-Sides/
/MP3/F/Feebles/Worst_Of_The_Feebles/
etc.

All of my songs within those directories are named like so:
Feebles,_The-Best_Of_The_Feebles-01-First_Song.mp3
Feebles,_The-Best_Of_The_Feebles-02-First_Song.mp3
Feebles,_The-Best_Of_The_Feebles-03-First_Song.mp3

And of course all of the ID3 tags (V1 and V2) are set, including track number (although from what I have  read it appears that  Rockbox does not look at the ID3 tags when inserting).

So... from the Database menu, how do I select an artist (or album, or genre, or whatever) and insert them into the current playlist in alphanumeric order? When I insert from the Files menu, they appear to be inserted in the correct order (presumably because of the naming convention I use for the individual tracks). However, if I were to select Feebles from the Database menu, and click Playlist > Insert, the songs from the three Feebles albums are inserted into the current playlist all mixed up. Both the tracks and the albums themselves are completely intermixed, like so:

Feebles,_The-Best_Of_The_Feebles-11-First_Song.mp3
Feebles,_The-Best_Of_The_Feebles-02-Second_Song.mp3
Feebles,_The-Worst_Of_The_Feebles-07-Seventh_Song.mp3
Feebles,_The-Feebles_B-Sides-09-Ninth_Song.mp3
Feebles,_The-Best_Of_The_Feebles-03-Third_Song.mp3
etc.

Any clues? Am I missing something obvious?

(These album and song names are made up, obviously.)

If you do the insert from a level that contains tracks immediately below it (this includes All Tracks), the tracks will be inserted in the order they are listed (for All Tracks ordered alphabetically by title tag). If you do the insert at a higher level (as in your example), I believe it does the same as if you picked All Tracks from the level below, but I don't know if this is a 'guaranteed' feature.

I have learned that nonstandard builds may impact how Rockbox works in unexpected ways, and I have been running a nonstandard build (Evil G, to be specific). So please ignore this thread. I will install a standard build, and if I still see the same behavior, I will start a new thread.

I am very sorry to have wasted anyone's time.
