Charging an iPod the wall outlet way...
« on: June 10, 2007, 01:58:53 PM »
Alright, so I have a adapter that you basically plug the iPod to the USB and the usb to a wall outlet adapter. When I'm using the normal iPod theme it will charge, but when I load the Rockbox firmware up it doesn't seem to recognize it or charge, AND it everytime it tries to auto shutdown after 10 min or so the Rockbox wont let it stay off (it turns it right back on again and the vicious cycle continues)... what gives and what can I do?

I assume you mean when you are using the Apple Firmware it will charge?
Rockbox is a firmware, not a simple theme.

It is charging, depending on what theme/WPS you are using you might or might not see an animated battery icon in the status bar.

Rockbox is not to blame here - the Apple Firmware / Hardware is what powers on when a charger is detected.  The hardware can not charge the battery while in an off state.

Though, according to the manual, Rockbox shouldn't "auto-shutdown" while the USB charger is plugged in, as USB charging isn't supposed to be considered idling.

Is this a USB charger and not a Firewire one?  (grasping at straws on that one.)

Thank you for the disection of my question ha. Anyways,

1) yeah sorry I do know that Rockbox and apple are the firmware, I was just throwing in a different word there for fun...

2) Even if the charging is slow I still think its not doing it at all because
     a) it never increases the battery charge when its left alone
     b) its been dead and after coming out of the "please wait, very low battery" thing it actually looses its charge enough to shut down... I'm doubtfull that its charging

3) I wasn't throwing blame around but to point out that when the normal apple firmware is loaded I can shut it down and let it charge faster (when all you see is the lightning arrow and the battery bar), but with Rockbox if I shut it down it restarts itself right away in Rockbox firmware

4)I'm using the typical iPod USB connector and when its plugged into the USB wall power outlet adapter it charges (...at least in the apple firmware) and the auto shutdown is the one that I have set for the 5 or 10 min

Sorry, not trying to sound snotty... I actually don't mind if I have to load the Apple firmware to charge from a wall outlet but I was just wondering if there was something I could do to get Rockbox to work with it...

Not a fantastic idea in a techinical forum, where the difference between words can be important.  For instance firmware = operating system, theme = change wps, font etc.

Additionally, if someone who is unaware of the difference is searching the forums and finds this thread it might cause quite some confusion. Please, be as specific as possible in the future.

My appologies, but would I be able to have some ideas as to my question?

The iPods don't currently recognize a wall charger as "being plugged in." It will charge, but Rockbox won't realize it's plugged in, and will act as if it's not. This is a current bug. This is only true of wall chargers. Holding menu and plugging into your computer should show charging status.
