If you are using an Ultimate Doom addon then you should use the ultimate doom wad (doomu.wad). If you select ultimate doom as the addon, the game does not go through the extra checks to make sure that it is a valid game. Specifically, the code is in d_main.c and it checks for the following lumps to be present in your main iwad:
"e2m1","e2m2","e2m3","e2m4","e2m5","e2m6","e2m7","e2m8","e2m9",
"e3m1","e3m3","e3m3","e3m4","e3m5","e3m6","e3m7","e3m8","e3m9",
"dphoof","bfgga0","heada1","cybra1","spida1d1"
If you are renaming the addon to doom.wad or something like that it will not work. If you are loading an addon you should have it in the addons folder and select the proper iwad for the addon. This would be doom.wad for doom registered, or doomu.wad for the retail "ultimate doom". It is possible to rename a wad and put it in the place of the main iwads (doom1, doom, doomu, doom2, doomf, plutonia, or tnt), but you need to have at least the files above (in the iwad) if you are trying to replace the doom registered version. That specific version (registered) is the only one that adds in those extra checks and the only one that should give you the error: "This is not the registered version." If you get this message you do not have a full copy or don't have the files in their proper locations. It may also be possible that this is a problem specific to the addon you are trying to run, but I thought that bug was fixed a while ago.
Rockbox cannot load more then 8 files at a time. Rockdoom consequently keeps track of this and will stop loading files if you hit the 8 limit which will eventually give you the error "A requested FID does not exist". I am not sure how you successfully loaded more than 8, what options are you running with in doom? Is this a modified build? Also, what is the specific addon you are having trouble with?

While we're talkin' about rockdoom problems, I have Ultimate Doom (yes, it's registered doom.wad. Played and it said Doom Registered, etc...), and it won't let me play episode four.
Actually, let me rephrase that, it doesn't show up in the chapters menu. It's been a while since I played it in Zdoom, so I'll see if it works later, but would there be any reason (probably Prboom...) that Chapter Four won't show up?
EDIT- Read above post, and if changing the wad name magically makes it work, then I'll try that first. Disregard this post
ANOTHER EDIT- Just outta curiosity, what's doomf.wad?

It used to signify the French version of doom2 (as doom2f I believe), eventually someone decided that having an option for the french version of doom was not needed and it should be freedoom instead. I don't know when this was done, I haven't gotten around to fixing it, but I would like to change it so that there is an option for french doom2 and one for freedoom. Rockdoom does not include the french strings from the original iD translation though so I don't know how much benefit there would be - I have also looked around briefly for dehacked translations of the game and never found any. It would be a relatively clean solution for different doom translations.
Let me know if naming the file doomu.wad doesn't work for ultimate doom. Ultimate doom and doom registered are different releases from iD and set different flags in prboom/doom/rockdoom. Ultimate doom added an extra episode which registered doom does not have. Rockdoom detects the version purely based on the filename (except for the extra checks in doom registered) and if it is named incorrect it won't know any better.

I made the change, it seemed odd to me to support a single other language of Doom2 as the only alternative, and Freedoom needed a place in the list. It was simplest to just do it that way, so I did.
Wouldn't it work to simply name the French Doom 2 WAD doom2.wad for use?
I don't see why there needs to be the option to have them in parallel.

It's standard among most of the source ports to include support for loading the french doom 2 wad (even though none of them that I know of include the french strings). I have never had a copy of the french doom2 translation wad so I don't know what else was changed in the release (I would imagine at least the menu graphics). The reason it was included is that it was one of the official releases from iD software. In the past source ports have only ever supported the "official" iwads from iD. That recently changed at least with Prboom in that they added support for freedoom as well. I didn't see a reason to remove an official release from rockdoom, and freedoom is the only other one we recommend apart from the shareware version as a legal, free replacement so it does make sense to include freedoom as an option as well. If there were other official translations I would add in their support, but there are not. I don't see it as being harmful or much trouble to add wad support in for doom2 french and freedoom and most people won't know the difference except the small (if any) number of people that use the french doom 2 wad. If nothing else it gives a placeholder for 1 other full iwad replacement if someone wanted to use it for wad X.
If someone speaks up for including the doom2 french version I will add it back in, if not then I guess we can just leave it be at least until I get around to syncing with the newest prboom (they added in some additional wad identification similar to what we did in rockdoom and I would eventually like to keep the sources as close as possible even though there are quite a few differences right now)

hey thanks, turns out, I've had the ultimate doom the whole time. It was just never named doomu.wad so i never saw the 4th episode. it said the ultimate doom on my loading screen at the beginning, and it had the extra switch on the first level that ultimate doom has, but i never knew that the name counts!
