Path Too Deep error
« on: June 08, 2007, 05:51:13 PM »
I installed rockbox on my Gigabeat F40 and everything went fine, but now when I try to put music on it I keep getting an error saying "the path is too deep". What does that mean? I've never heard that before.

How "deep" a path is is basically how many folder levels there are.

C:\Blah\Something\> is two deep.
C:\Blah\Somethin\Foo\Bar\> is four deep, and so on.

How many folders deep are the files on your Gigabeat?

I'm not certain, but FAT may have a 256 character limit for a file path.  Its been forever since i looked at it though.

I have my music sorted as H:\Music\Genre\Artist\Album

And how many characters is the longest one. And it's for all files, not just music.

My file names aren't that long. I decided to try adding music from Ubuntu but I still got an error.
It said I/O Error when it got to this file:
E:\Music\Comedy\Dane Cook\Retaliation\Disc 1\09-Car Alarm.mp3

I tried adding music again and after 2.10 GB I get one of two errors:
cyclic redundancy or Invalid MS-DOS function
It will absolutely not let me add anything once it gets to 2.10 GB

Have you tried scanning your disk for errors?

It sounds like it's more or less a hardware problem of some sort.

I figured out the problem. There were some .SAT files that I deleted in Windows Explorer and they still showed up in the original firmware. I formatted in Windows Media Player, reinstalled Rockbox, and everything is fine so far. Thanks.
