the ipodpatcher will not recognize my 1st gen iPod Nano

Try it again with a freshly downloaded ipodpatcher (from today I mean!) - linuxstb made some changes to the detection code in the last couple of days that might sort you out :)

That won't help - the official binaries haven't been updated yet.

If as he sayes he used I tunes, I don't think The new ipodpatcher will help
The detection simply expands the detection method to cover ipods not restored using itunes, but using some third party format tool.
