please help ease fears...
« on: June 06, 2007, 11:54:01 AM »
I have had a iPod Video 30g on my mind for some time, and it is within reach but...

My dad won't get it for me, because I have Rockbox on my mind.  I have read practically every page on the install process but he won't get it for me.  I have a friend who has Rockbox and IPL on his 30g but...my dad doesn't trust me.

Can you help ease his fears that the install process won't mess up?

Rockbox is easily removed and there is always a way to restore the ipod back to factory specs, unless you do something to it your self.

When I was in my early teens and wanted something I didn't ask dad I mowed lawns, went out after dark picked dew worms and sold them to trout fishermen ($5 a small can). I cleared two gran one summer for a few hours labor a day. So perhaps you should consider an odd job or two. The 30 gb is pretty cheep if fond on sale (couple of hundred bucks) and at $20 a lawn even mowing will add up to an ipod pretty quick. So buy it your self and do with it as you wish. Just my to cents but then dad is always the boss untill you are 20 or so I guess. But being a parent my self my guess is that if a parent sees that a person has earned his money for his or her's desire then they will allow the person to do with it has they please. If you are even too young for this (odd jobs) then my apology, I would then except the ipod as it is and be happy.  Or perhaps teach dad how to install it and remove it if necessary. Perhaps your friend could demonstrate the process for your dad with his ipod.

Two grand mighten sound like much to some of you youngsters but back then you could buy a pretty sweet car for a sum like it and still have lots left over for insurance and gass, it would be much greater in todays money. Man I hate dating my self like that. 8-)

Rockbox'ing an ipod is completely safe. Obviously, the people behind rockbox can't give some kind of warranty, but if all you're going to do is use the rockbox-provided ipodpatcher to install the rockbox loader, virtually nothing can go wrong that can't be easily fixed by doing the process again [correctly] or restoring the apple firmware to its original state. As you probably know, installing rockbox doesn't remove the apple firmware at all.
Dad, as long as you didn't raise a complete retard, it's safe.

I agree completely.
As long as you follow the instructions, nothing bad will happen.
Even If you somehow do screw up, you can always restore.
