Sansa: Screen whitening bug still not completely fixed (?)
« on: June 05, 2007, 12:31:08 PM »
Hi everyone,

after using the Sansa for a whole week without problems, my screen just now suddenly became white, then turned to blue/black.

It looks exactly the same as before the patch that said to hopefully fix the "melting screen".

Apparently the bug is still not completely fixed. It was the first occurence in a whole week, though.

Did you compile a new bootloader and installed it (a bootloader newer than when that change was added, specifically).

I'm not sure but it seems to me like that sort of change would affect the bootloader rather than the build.

How do I know whether the change affected the bootloader?

And how do I update the bootloader (I can't find this information in the manual)?

Do I really have to compile it myself? Are the precompiled versions too old?

I don't know if it affected the bootloader. If it did, yes, the current one would be out of date. You'd need to compile your own, then use sansapatcher to add it to your sansa. Run sansapatcher --help to get instructions for how to use it with external bootloader files.

I dont tihnk a new bootloader was needed, but i've attached a new one for you (built from svn)

install it with sansapatcher -a PP5022.mi4.bin

if sansaptacher refuses, then rename it to .mi4 first

I want to ask 2 question before trying this:
1. Do I have to uninstall the old bootloader first or can I simply install the new one over the old one with the command you posted?
2. Can I revert to my old bootloader (the one that came with sansapatcher) if the new version causes some kind of trouble?

By the way, the screen whitening happend a second time today, while I was on the bus.

The newer version should not cause any trouble. But if it does just download another version of sansapatcher and install that bootloader. You will have to remove your older bootloader but its very easy to do with sansapatcher, then you can install the newer one.

p.s. thanks for the newer bootloader jdgordon ;)

You don't need to remove the older bootloader, telling sansapatcher to add the new one should overwrite it.

You also shouldn't need to download more than one sansapatcher. If the mi4 that jdgordon has provided doesn't work, just run sansapatcher the way the manual describes instead of using it to add the mi4, and it'll install the official bootloader over the modified one.

Where do you get the PP5022.mi4.bin file from?

Yeah, obviously I did that but I am still not sure.  Attached to what? does it come part of the sansapatcher already when you download it or does it need downloading separately.
I tried looking at the SVN for a while but could not work it out.
Sorry for my ignorance, I am a Rockbox newbie.

No offense, but in all honesty, if you can understand then you really shhuoldnt use the bootloader I supplied.
I dont mea to be rude, but misuse could cause your sansa to be unusable.

vortex, did the BL help at all?

Can't say for sure yet. Last time I used it for almost a week without problems before the first occurence.

Installing the BL certainly didn't harm though. :)

Actually, whenever i try to run sansapatcher --help in the sansa patcher, it just closes down. Dont know how to install it otherwise
