Rockbox: could it take stuff other than gameboy games?
« on: June 04, 2007, 06:56:45 PM »
Alright I've got the 5th Gen iPod Video 30gig and I've been playing around with rockbox for a while and recently got to the fun of rockboy... Alright, I get that in rockboy you can play gameboy and gameboy color games but are there any ways to get it to play stuff from super nintendo or nintendo or sega gamegear... it would be freakin schweet...

Only if you write the code or port properly licensed code.  You should also consider practical matters.  Is an iPod going to have the processing overhead to emulate the hardware of a SNES in real time?  Is a game that can only be played at 1/2 speed or less worth playing?  Are there enough buttons on an iPod to play SNES games?

If your looking for game gear and stuff go over to ipod linux.  If your good at coding then you should contribute to the rockbox project.  Don't expect much from the ipod linux though.

I soppose that going for gamegear might be a bit much but i would think that the NES and SNES would be alright since it can handle gameboy color games... Although I am pretty good at working with and alterig files that come to me I havn't learned how to compile or anything (i had Visual Basic freshman year but thats it)... oh well it was just a thought

Check the ipod linux they have game gear and the nes is working at about 90-100 percent emulation. . .      I think.

I believe NES should work - there's enough buttons, and the mp3 player will be powerful enough. GBAs and SNESs are just too powerful. Also, someone needs to make the emulator first >.>

That's kind of the key point - and emulators tend not to be trivial to write!

There was another thread somewhere where someone posted a link (on Wikipedia) to a list of GPL compatible NES emulators -- some were written in C.  That would be a good place to start for those interested.
