and how do you want to transfer the map data? Google Earth loads them dynamically when needed (and the complete dataset is huuuge ... nothing you can just easily put on the player). Plus, Google Earth uses the 3D hardware acceleration of modern graphic cards. Nothing a dap has ...

Considering that the strongest rockboxed player has a 300 megahertz processer (the gigabeat) and my old computer with a 1 gigahertz processor has a hard time running it without tons of lag. And as blue brother said the amount of hard drive space that google earth would take up would be gigantic.  Good luck though.  ;)

Yeah .. but .. phones can download all the map information over the airwaves (e.g. using gprs or a 3g data connection - cos it's a phone).  Your regular rockbox'd mp3 player can't, it has no radio interface.

Good point.  I wouldn't wast all the space on my ipod just to have a crummy low quality map.

right now i have an extra 15 gb on my ipod. so i would have lots of space, also mabe you could download so you wouldn't need any air waves. im pretty sure that it doesn't take up more than 2 gb.

While I personally would love handy maps on my iPod, I don't think this is practical.  Maybe having the maps for certain areas would be possible.

Note, with a little elbow grease it's possible right now.  Do a google search for "Yahoo directions ipod" (sans quotes) and, with a little modification you can tailor that to Rockbox.  I've done it.  It was nice on the one trip I did (esp. when I got off course) but I don't think I'd go through all the work again.

Personally, I keep various maps of major UK towns and cities on my iPod, just incase. They've come in pretty useful when drunk and lost in London at 4am.  ::)

If you download a high res map then you can use the photo veiwer to magnify certain parts of the map.  That would work for most things.

a 1280 x 1024 doesn't even take that long to load.
