codec failure on IPOD video 30GB
« on: June 03, 2007, 12:06:46 PM »
Hello,
I have installed the rockbox firmware for the first time yesterday on my "old" ipod 5g (30gb).
well everything (well, games at least) runs smoothly besides that I am no able to play any kind of audio (tried mp3 wav m4a flac) files. I mean, they play but sound is awful. Full of static, clicks etc.

The error is "codec failure" and then "couldn't load codec /.rockbox/codecs/m'a.codec".
I noticed the mispell in the codec while in the .rockbox/codecs there is mpa.codec.

I have tried buth audio files from the database and also by putting files directly into the ipod in drive mode. Needless to say that codecs are in the right place and that original firmware plays audio files correclty.

Any possible reason for that?
Thanks in advance

Hmm, that rockbox can't load the codec is indeed strange...
I'm just guessing but you could try these two things:

1) Scan the disk of the ipod with scandisk, chkdisk or an equivalent disk error scanning software.

2) Copy over a new build of rockbox overwriting the old one and make sure that you unmount/eject/safely remove the ipod before unplugging it.

Thanks for the reply.
Scandisk/chkdsk is clean, and so is the unmount procedure.
Unfortunately I do not see any improvement.

Sometimes settings become inconsistent between  builds.  Have you cleared your settings recently?  If that doesn't help you might delete your current build and download a new one rather than overwriting the files.

Always done that.
No results though...

I am starting to believe that my ipod hates rockbox >:(

So this problem has persisted across several builds?

regardless the build, it fails to play even the simplest CBR mp3 file (again the ipod original firmware does it smoothly) ???

Are you *sure* that you have overwritten all the files in /.rockbox and not just updated the rockbox.ipod file. Codec failure normally occurs when the codec build revision does not match the firmware build revision.

I have * deleted * the \.rockbox directory. And copied the new build from scratch in the ipod root. Never overwritten anything.

Check that you don't have a rockbox.ipod file in the root directory. You should only see it under .rockbox/

I have an update.
After wiping my IPOD it seems that the "codec failure - couldn't load blablabla" message has disappeared. Nevertheless the audio is still totally distorted. It's accelerated (seems twice as fast, in fact a 3.25 min mp3 file lasts only 1.42 min), disturbed and lots of noise added.

Any guess  now?

Well that's something!

Does this happen with all audio regardless of codec, sampling rate, etc.?

yes, althought I haven't tried "all" the sample rates and codecs. For sure it happens with 129kbs VBR and 192kbps VBR

Those are neither sample rates nor codecs. 129kbps is a bitrate, and "VBR" means variable bitrate, and doesn't tell us which codec you're using either.
