Ipod Video 80 GB Mount Problems

This is very interesting - I also have been finding I've got very slow transfer times. I chalked it up to my computer being crap, but maybe that's it!

knight4led:
many people notice slower transfer speeds in disk mode. It really has nothing to do with Rockbox since its Apple's disk mode, but like I said before, booting the original FW fixes any slow speed issues.

peteypiefrogworth:
Thanks knight! OK, well my problem is that somehow when I first ran ipodpatcher I lost the original firmware - when I try and book into the Apple firmware I get the endless reboot cycle problem.

I'm fairly sure I can't just download the 80GB Apple firmware from somewhere(?), but I'm scared: if I let iTunes "repair" my iPod, will it definitely leave the hard drive alone, other than the iPod_Control folder?
i.e. Can I open iTunes, get it to do the repair, make sure I now have the original firmware, and then run ipodpatcher.exe to install the Rockbox bootloader, without losing everything that I've put onto the iPod?

knight4led:
No, the iPod restore in iTunes formats your iPod and brings it back to factory settings as if it were the first time it was plugged in. You could try to get your hands on another 80gig and use ipodpatcher to extract the firmware partition, then use ipodpatcher to write that to yours.

I believe the firmware partition should be the same for all iPods, HFS+ or FAT32, so maybe one of us here could do that for you. I would try it, but I don't have my iPod with me.

From the IpodPatcher wiki:
 --read-firmware (-rf) filename.ipod

Read the main firmware image (excluding any bootloader) and store it in the filename.ipod file.

Rockbox users can use this command to extract the main Apple firmware to a file. When instructed to load the Apple firmare (via the hold switch or MENU button), the Rockbox bootloader looks for such a file (with the name apple_os.ipod) in the root of your FAT32 partition, and will load that firmware in preference to any firmware in the OSOS image.

--write-firmware (-wf) filename.ipod

This command can be used to completely replace the Apple firmware in the OSOS image with either the Rockbox bootloader or the main rockbox.ipod file.

Thanks again knight!
In that case, I'm thinking all I need is an appropriate apple_os.ipod file from an 80GB iPod...

If someone happens to have one that works, I'd be most appreciative if they could provide it for me! I *ought* to have it somewhere, but... seems not :/ I think I was juggling a few different things when I did my original patches (before the 80GB port was officially launched) and lost track.
