OGG's won't appear on my Sansa e260
« on: May 30, 2007, 12:44:08 AM »
So far I'm just trying to see if I can get OGG's to play in Rockbox, hopefully with tags and album art showing up but I can't get any OGG to show up in the database, no matter how I put it on the player.

How do they go in then? What I need is to get MediaMonkey to sync and transcode my music to OGG and get Rockbox to see everything.

make sure the it is connecting to usb with MSC and not MTP... if you copy the oggs onto it in explorer can you see the files i rockbox's file browser?

if you are usin the rockbox DB have you got it auto-updating?

Like any other audio files- just put it on the player. Make sure your Vorbis files are tagged with Vorbis comments, some programs tries to put id3 tags in them which is wrong.

Transcoding is definitely a no no- your music will sound like ass. Alway rerip and reencode from a lossless sources.

I've got it now that I'm in MSC with MM (I was trying to do it in MTP.) The weird thing is when I was trying to use Explorer to add tracks manually the database wasn't asking to be updated/rebooted. I'll see about that later, but for now I'm just gonna sync and transcode with MM.

However...

I have no original sources cause my music is downloaded. Anyway, how would transcoding from MP3 to OGG degrade the sound? Songs wouldn't sound any worse than the original MP3 would it? (I'm just trying to cut down on filesizes, that's all)

why on earth would you want to transcode mp3->ogg... both are lossy codecs, so yes, you would lose quality (lots probably) going from one tot he other...

just stick with mp3

Transcoding loses fidelity. Your songs will sound worse. Whether the quality difference matters to you more than filesize depends on your ears and your needs.

Basically, have you ever taken a photocopy of a photocopy? You notice how even though it's *basically* the same thing, there's those extra black specks here and there, and the edges aren't *quite* as sharp as they were before?

That's kinda similar. MP3 cuts out bits you can't hear to make the file smaller. OGG cuts out bits you can't hear to make the file smaller. They don't necessarily cut out the same bits.

Yeah, I see about transcoding now. But I ran my own tests and I'm fine with the quality. I don't walk around with my music-- the Sansa just sits connected to our crappy system at work, or on my crappy car stereo. I doubt there will be any audible increase in crappienss when I transcode.

Sorry - so why are you transcoding ? What's wrong with the mp3s you already have ?

The filesizes are cut in half with 96k OGG's. I double my storage.

I also transcoded all of my songs for my Sansa (I kept the originals of course). The source files were mostly mp3 at 320kbit/s, I encoded them all to Vorbis at quality 4 (~128kbit/s).

I can hear no difference whatsoever. The file size, however, was cut half. I think this is definitely worth the (not noticeable) quality loss from the transcoding.

Wow 320kbps, you might as well just use FLAC. Transcoding from a 320kbps LAME encoded MP3 to -q 4 using the AoTuV branch of oggenc should probably be OK. However, the OP downloaded most of the files from the Internet, so they are most likely badly encoded 128kbps-192kbps MP3's.  In the end of the day, it all depends on whether it is transparent to you and how fussy you are that it is close to the pristine source. Here are some general guide lines:

Yeah, I didn't mention that, yes, they do sound a bit like ass through my amp right here. But they're OK in the car with the horrible system it has anyway.
