Using iTunes to restore
« on: May 28, 2007, 12:34:56 PM »
As stated in many places in the manual the easiest way to convert an HFS+ iPod to FAT32 is simply connecting to iTunes on a PC, but that presents a problem for me.

I managed to get iTunes 7.1 onto a friend's laptop, but upon connecting my iPod it wouldn't restore it without an internet connection. Therein lies the issue, we can't get internet except a few hours a day and usually not on our own computers.

I realize this isn't strictly a Rockbox question, but anyone aware if it is possible to bypass the internet prompt on Windows iTunes? It doesn't ask when restoring on my Mac version.

(I tried this as a means to double check that my iPod was formatted correctly because I am having issues where the bootloader reports it can't find rockbox.ipod)

I think Apple also has a stand alone restore utility that they distribute with the firmware updater.

I was looking for that, but since iTunes 7 that has been dropped and my iPod currently has the 1.2.1 firmware which is only in the latest versions of iTunes

Apple have stopped distributing the standalone ipod updaters, but you can still find them on the web.  The ipodwizard forums are probably a good place to look.

This is the page you want.  There's currently a problem with the links though -- they're attached to missing image and so are not clickable.  You should be able to view the source and strip the proper URL for the download you want from that, though.

Thanks. Still, doesn't have the latest updater including 1.2.1 firmware. I think I figured out how to stop Windows iTunes from checking for updates, so I am going to check on my friend's computer tonight.

I really want to get Rockbox working so I hope this works.
