New WPS theme: phkGUITAR
« on: May 27, 2007, 12:31:58 AM »
♪
My new theme for iPod video, phkGUITAR. The idea of this eletric guitar based theme, came to me last year, but I just started to work on it on the last week.

In my opinion, the longer and hardest part of doing a WPS theme is to think where an how to dispose and organize the images and infos on the screen, combining with theme concept. I tried a lot of combinations, and thought in endless variations, but I'm ending choosing for this.

This theme got both Gibson and Fender caractheristics mixed. A Les Paul Jr body with a P-90 "soap bar" single pick up, and a SG pickguard style. A Fender type bridge, knob and switch.
Please, don't ask me why the 5 position switch if just have one pick-up...:P

-The Battery level is graphically displayed in the pickup polepieces, with the percent too
-The Volume level is displayed graphically by the rotating VOL knob, with the dB info too
-A pick / icons represents the player status* My doubt: which looks better?
-A 5 position switch for the repeat modes
-The output jack flashs red when in disk activity
-The pickguard is where the track name infos are displayed.

I'll also make a version with scrolling margins to keep the track name info inside the pickguard.

This theme rocks! (pun intended, I know I'm lame, thank you)

I prefer the version with the pick indicating the play status, it fits the theme better, and you've put it in different positions to indicate the play mode, so that should cancel out it being harder to read.
Glad to see another WPS coming from you PHK, you always deliver the right stuff.

Just curious: why are your gif's so spastic? do you make them while on speed or something? ;)

Thanks for the reply, evilG.

I agree that the pick for play status fits the theme concept better.  But visually I'm in doubt... I didn't check the pick version on the iPod yet.

*I made the GIF on Corel PhotoPaint, and I just repeat some images to stay more time displayed. (i'm not shure if I understood your question, sorry... My English...)

I meant that the frame rate on your gif's is really quick, the image changes really fast. I have no experience whatsoever making gifs, it's just something I've noticed.

Any potential for getting a gigabeat version, it seems all the spectacular themes are going to the ipods.

This can be explained by market statistics : Apple has about 87% of the market share followed by creative. (not sure about the creative part) So if you look at the math, it is most likely that a rockbox user owns an iPod, I'd say that around 90% of the questions in General Discussion come from iPod users.

Anyway, I second a gigabeat port, though I don't see it being particularly easy.

This is a VERY cool theme, though strictly speaking, on a real guitar, a single P-90 would be more likely to be in the neck position or in the middle (like an ES-125 or an early ES-330) rather than by the bridge.  :)

wow!  This is very nice.  I also like the pick style better.  I third a gigabeat version, though I can tell that converting it won't be an easy task.

Hmmm... It depends, Febs. In a real guitar, like mine and all the Les Paul JRs, it has just one P-90 on the bridge.      http://images.google.com.br/images?q=les+paul+jr&gbv=2&ndsp=20&svnum=10&hl=pt-BR&start=0&sa=N

But not for this. As I said, my intention was not to make the theme with real characteristics. I just prioritized the appearance. I tried a humbucking and a Strat single coil, but does not fits better in this theme like the P-90.

Thanks for all replies.

Thanks Febs!

Thanks mor!

The theme was finished. I used the pick version. And included 2 switchs for the Shuffle and Hold modes. Is on the gallery for download.

Thats a cool theme.  The only thing that I would recommend would be to make the frets a little more metalic colored.  All in all nice job.
