Archos JBR20 / Hardware upgrade suggestions
« on: May 25, 2007, 05:32:14 PM »
I have a JBR v2 and still love it, but for the following issues:

1. The Ear Out jack has been stressed over time and now is very loose inside. Unbelievably frustration when you're trying to listen to music in the car and the connection keeps going out! Is there an after-market place I can buy a new jack and install myself, or should I send it someplace?

2. Middle function button on the front has sort of "caved in" and is hard to press. Also, hitting the up button aggressively sometimes activates the middle function button. Bizarre. Can these buttons be replaced?

3. When the battery gets low, if the unit is on its back it shuts down. Also if it's cold it won't start up unless battery is at least 50% Where is the best place to go for battery replacements, and can it even be done?

4. 20 GB is just NOT enough. I'm sure I can upgrade this puppy, but what to get? What is the largest hard drive that I can install and run RockBox? (BTW, I'm currently running 1.40a. I'm guessing I should install the latest rev.)

Any advice would be most appreciated!

i've been using an archos JBR20 V1 for the last 6 years & absolutely love it. it has rockbox flashed, 2700mAh batteries & a 160gb hd fitted.

i did have the latest archos 504 160gb too but decided to sell that & keep & upgrade the old V1 (did have a 120gbb drive in it) as for music it's just a much better player - thats how good it is.

if i were you i'd get one off ebay for about £40 & upgrade the hd in it as these are cheap too now.

i'd sell yours for whatever i could get on ebay.

just my opinion.

if you know how to solder surface mount, I can tell you where to source the components for a new jack. I need to know the footprint (like how the legs of the jack connect to the PCB) first, though. If you want to look around yourself, check the mouser.com and digikey.com catalogs.

If you can get a pic of the switch that's not working well or better yet a part number, you might be able to find the part on mouser / digikey
