MAJOR ISSUE: Gigabeat X30

Hi,

To explain my issue, as I am quite new to this, I used the directions on how to install rockbox from another website, unaware that everything that I downloaded and used was completely out of date.

Unfortunately, I could not tell you in any way shape or form exactly what bootloaders, files etc were put onto the HDD as I cannot remember the website.

Okay, let me explain what is happening:
1. The X30 is turned on.
2. The gigabeat loading screen appears.
3. As the loading bar gets to about half way, the screen goes blue, and I cannot go any further.

It is completely inacessable, as I cannot use the volume up + power on button, nor the menu + power button, nor can I use the A + power on button.

I am quite new to opening HDD Mp3 players, and have given it a go with the Gigabeat, only to fail while trying to open the back case (there is no way to remove the side buttons, which stop the back case from coming off).

Perhaps it is time to send it to Toshiba?

Also, I am quite aware that I will not be able to get it repaired under warranty, I am quite aware of that.

Any help that you could possibly give would be very much so appreciated.

Yes, for once a newbie here is able to speak in a normal manner and NoT lIkE tHiS or OMG HELP DROP EVERYTHING AND HELP ME COZ IM IMPORTANT AND MY PARENTS WILL GO NUTSO IF THEY FIND OUT I BRICKED MY MP3 COZ IM 13, or even sometimes even a mixture of both.

Hopefully if I don't get a reply sometime in the next few days the Gigabeat X30 will be sent away to the nearest Toshiba Service Centre.

Yes, you are having a boot loader problem. The only way to fix it is if you open it open disconnect the hard drive and re-connect it.

I HAD an x30 and i opened it up the side buttons come off it. I don't recommend opening the x30 because its a crap design and you will damage it  (its not as easy to open as the f series)

Your best option may be to sell it and buy an f series or maybe give it to Toshiba and see what they say.

Thanks for such a quick reply !

I contacted Toshiba yesterday, and they told me that I am more than welcome to send it to them to fix it, but it is not covered by warranty, so they will not repair it free of charge.

Perhaps you explain to me EXACTLY how you took the back casing off the X30?

This would be a real help, as I will give it a go.

I think what he's saying is that when he opened it, he broke the side buttons - since as you say, they're in the way.

The side buttons did not break but they did bend.

I unscrewed all the screws and shoved a small screw driver into the case and tried to pull it off because the case is Glued on. Look i highly recommend you don't take it apart your self because you WILL bend the case and their is a high chance of breaking something. If i were you, I'd pay to get it fixed but if you don't want to then do what i did.

1) Take off all screws. (there is a hidden one on the side)
2) Attempt to pull the case off and when you find an opening stick a screw driver in and wedge out the side part of the case (Leave the button side to last)
3) After loosing up the left side of the gigabeat it should be easier to take off.
4) Once case is off unscrew anything that is blocking the way to the HDD.
5) Disconnect the ribbon cable from the Gigabeat's MOTHERBOARD by pushing on the connector to disconnect it.
6) Connect the Gigabeat to the computer and it should say No HDD drive found.
7) Connect the HDD back on
the computer should now pick up your gigbeat and put all the required files back on it.

When i took apart mine, i didn't bend the case too much and the good thing is that it is easy to bend back. I stuffed up because i disconnected the ribbon cable from the HDD instead off the motherboard.

Thanks for the information but by the looks of it the best thing to do is to probably just take it to a Toshiba service centre. Getting a professional to do it in this instance looks like the best thing to do.

I thought it would be appropriate for me to get back to everybody on this. In the end I did decide to send the X30 back to Toshiba, and they reinstalled the firmware for me, free of charge.

From sending to recieving back again, it took about 10 working days.

Perhaps for people having the same problem, or a similar problem, it would just be best to send it back to Toshiba.

Good to know that your problem is fixed and i'm surprised they did it free of charge. Yeh i too would recommend people that have problems that need the hot swap method done, to send it back to toshiba (unless they have the F series because it easier to open)
