It seems like it is a problem then. It happened again to me yesterday, so I've had no choice but to remove it for the time being. It's a real shame because I've got so used to the features, but I'm not prepared to risk a £130 investment to listen to FLAC. Today I reencoded a ton of FLAC files to ALAC and that'll have to do me for now.

I'll definitely go back to Rockbox a few versions down the line though.

Harryet, keep checking every day - you never know. The clicking on my ipod was very faint, so who knows. Even keeping the processor running requires power and if it hasn't shut down then the processor is still running.

I was wondering.. If draining your battery helped you..  My battery is fully loaded and the supposed thing that's 'keeping it dead'  consumes almost no electricity..

Is opening the iPod up and disconnecting (and reconnecting) the battery manually an option?
Do you think it would help?

harryett, that is certainly an option and given my experience with my Gigabeat I think this could do the trick.  Of course it would be a bummer to have to do this procedure with any sort of regularity.  Hopefully the source of this behavior can be found.  Is there an idea of exactly when this behavior started occurring?

ooh yeah..  Im gonna try dis- and reconnecting the battery right now..

I get used to daily problems really easy and I wouldn't be surprised it I sort of developed  some kind of MacGyverish way to open the iPod with my left hand in less than 20sec or something and making it  a habit..

I'll get back to you later with the results ;)

Which lead did you disconnect, exactly?

Doh!  So a hard power cycling does nothing for it?

Maybe try charging it up now and trying the Menu + Select for 30 seconds routine.  Unfortunately I'm running out of suggestions.   :-\

You may have simply suffered an unrelated hardware failure. . .
