USB Connect time
TheGooman:
Point taken. Come to think of it, part of the reason I got into Rockbox was that itunes messed up some time ago when I went to update it...for some reason it never fully uninstalled quicktime and so it can neither install nor uninstall anything related to it. This was not an issue before so it didn't come to mind but that could be it and I did consider disabling autorun but, as you pointed out, it disables other wanted things too.
Alright well, seeing as how it's not rockbox I s'pose there's not much more to this thread unless anyone else has some suggestions.
Thanks.

Have you tried reinstalling itunes?

If the IPOD looks like a local disk to XP (as opposed to removable - you can check that in device manager, or disk manager) then you have some work to do to keep XP from housekeeping all over you - like turning off recycle bin on the IPOD drive letter (unless you wanted it) and System restore, and Indexing service. Your virus checker may also believe it has the right (obligation?) to scan all sorts of stuff when the disk is plugged in.
fwiw my XP system is still sometimes sluggish to admit a new drive has arrived. I get the 'beep' from the speaker but then it can be a minute or more before explorer window pops up .. XP having scanned the drive to decide whether to autorun for photos, music, mixed content, or whatever (and those reads having been virus scanned ont he way if you are not careful).
As for disabling autorun, it is easier said than done .. properly disabling it that is.

Disabling Autoplay is VERY easy in XP.
1) Go to microsoft's website and get the TweakUI powertoy for XP
2) Run TweakUI, open the Autoplay option, and uncheck all the drives you don't want to autoplay.
For what it's worth, upon plugging in any of my players, I have access to it within 5-10 seconds (assuming the player's plugged in after I've booted it into a firmware with USB support: Rockbox for the H100 and Gigabeat, native firmwares for the iPod and Sansa. Waiting on a reboot takes some extra time, of course.)
