USB Connect time
« on: May 19, 2007, 04:06:02 PM »
Since I've gotten into adding and manipulating themes I find myself frequently connecting and disconnecting my ipod from the comp. I've realized, though, that it take a loong time to connect; I'm talking about 5 mins avg and sometimes more. I would understand that it takes long to process b/c of rockbox's presence but I think this is excessive. Is time delay something just affecting me? Is there anything I can do about it?

Thanks

You could try shutting down first before you connect, once the iPod is off, it should automatically turn on into disk mode when you connect the USB

No, I'm running Windows XP. I do have an alternate shell (Talisman) but it's never posed any sort of problem, including connect time for the ipod. When I plug in the ipod it goes into disk mode, displaying the "do not disconnect" screen but its from that point that it takes a while to register in the computer.

Then I'd say it's your PC causing the problem and not rockbox, rockbox has nothing to do with the iPod's disk mode so it could not be rockbox causing the problem (just clarifying, you never really said if rockbox was the problem or not)

p.s. Can't tell you what the problem is, do you have itunes open? maybe you need to tell itunes to behave itself when you plug in your iPod (i.e. tell it not to open automatically).

An easy way would be to just disable autorun, but that would disable all the autorun stuff, not just your ipod

Point taken. Come to think of it, part of the reason I got into Rockbox was that itunes messed up some time ago when I went to update it...for some reason it never fully uninstalled quicktime and so it can neither install nor uninstall anything related to it. This was not an issue before so it didn't come to mind but that could be it and I did consider disabling autorun but, as you pointed out, it disables other wanted things too.

Alright well, seeing as how it's not rockbox I s'pose there's not much more to this thread unless anyone else has some suggestions.

Thanks.

If the IPOD looks like a local disk to XP (as opposed to removable - you can check that in device manager, or disk manager) then you have some work to do to keep XP from housekeeping all over you - like turning off recycle bin on the IPOD drive letter (unless you wanted it) and System restore, and Indexing service. Your virus checker may also believe it has the right (obligation?) to scan all sorts of stuff when the disk is plugged in.

fwiw my XP system is still sometimes sluggish to admit a new drive has arrived. I get the 'beep' from the speaker but then it can be a minute or more before explorer window pops up .. XP having scanned the drive to decide whether to autorun for photos, music, mixed content, or whatever (and those reads having been virus scanned ont he way if you are not careful).

As for disabling autorun, it is easier said than done .. properly disabling it that is.

Disabling Autoplay is VERY easy in XP.

1) Go to microsoft's website and get the TweakUI powertoy for XP
2) Run TweakUI, open the Autoplay option, and uncheck all the drives you don't want to autoplay.

For what it's worth, upon plugging in any of my players, I have access to it within 5-10 seconds (assuming the player's plugged in after I've booted it into a firmware with USB support: Rockbox for the H100 and Gigabeat, native firmwares for the iPod and Sansa. Waiting on a reboot takes some extra time, of course.)

I've tried reinstalling itnues, yes, and quicktime keeps getting in the way somehow. I've tried add/rem etc. to no avail, even manually deleting all the file related to it but mothing so i Just gave up on it.

GSV3MiaC I think you hit upon it as my comp is reading it as a local disk. I'll try to see what i can do about that (and autorun, thanks Llorean) then I'll update.

Well, I've disabled autorun as indicated, recycle bin is not a factor, if I remember correctly system restore is not enabled (and I can't access it anyway...more errors) and it still takes about 4 or 5 mins.

Maybe we should all be like evilg and get with linux  ;)

I'll be backing up my comp and reformatting/installing everything sometime this week (hopefully). We'll see then.

On topic: do you have any paranoid Antivirus software running? maybe try telling it to ignore your iPod to prevent it from scanning it everytime you connect it.

Totally offtopic: If you're going for linux I recommend Ubuntu, either ubuntu or kubuntu the only difference is ubuntu uses GNOME, and kubuntu uses KDE (I prefer KDE btw).

windows is not everyones pain in the ass...

some people just dont know how to use it...

as i see the problem is that the ipod is connected to 1.1 usb port. it takes about  5 minutes to connect.windows usually locks up/freezes. the solution: get usb 2.0. this will solve your problems. and dont connect your ipod through RB (apple)disk mode. it is slow... and it sux...
