USB LOGO freeze
« on: May 19, 2007, 12:50:44 PM »
Hi i'm brand new to Ipods and rockbox however i have many years experiance with PC's and general tinkering with electronics etc.

I believe i've installed rockbox to my girlfriends 2nd gen Ipod mini.  I believe it installed alright as i could go through the menu's and change settings without any problem and without obvious signs of data coruption / missing files.  So i decieded to connect the ipod back upto the pc via the ipod usb cable so that i could put some music on it,  However when i connected it the Usb plug symbol came up on the ipod screen and it seems to have frozen from that point :(.

I didn't hear windows detect any usb device and i can't seem to find the ipod in device manager.  I've clicked and held every button on the ipod to try and go past the screen but without any luck.  i've tried disconnecting the usb link (hoping the ipod would change from the usb lead screen) but unfortunatly it wont change.

There's probably an easy fix for this but i haven't managed to find it (and i have searched both here and google)

If someone could please help me that'd be awsome as i like i've staighted the ipod's my girlfriends (for her upcoming birthday) and unfortunatly she needs rockbox on the ipod has she's pretty much blind and wouldn't be able to navigate the standard ipod menu's.

Any help is much appreciated whatever it may be.

regards

Does this happen every time you try to connect USB while in Rockbox?

Does the iPod's USB work okay if you just reboot it into the apple firmware, and connect USB there?

yes every time i connect it via usb.  I've just opened it up and i've disconnected the battery.  after doing that it works again, and if boot it up in drive mode then connect it via usb it works and windows detects etc.  however when i try to disconnect it by using "safely disconnect" it doesn't go from the "don't disconnect" screen (on the ipod). if i disconnect it by ignoring the warning it says "ok to disconnect" but i can't get it off that screen now :(.

I haven't tried it in ipod mode yet but if i can get it off this screen i will try.

Just hold Menu+Select until the screen clears.

Also, if it's actually on the iPod "Don't Disconnect" screen, you're in the Apple USB mode (Rockbox doesn't have a USB mode, it just restarts into it), which means it's a problem with the iPod itself.

I have a similar issue too:

sometimes rebooting into disk mode doesn't work but hang on the usb screen. Emergency disk mode works fine. The strange thing about this is that it only happens sometimes (seems to be somewhat day-relates -- some days it reproduceably hangs, others it works just fine). It's a known issue.

That file needs to be present in /.rockbox/langs, needs to be named english.voice and you need to have english set as voice (which is the default). As you haven't told already I need to ask if this is true in your setup.

Okay, I have the same problem and it wasn't so bad before. Everytime I connect to USB the rockbox-usb-screen crashes. A few days ago (older rockbox-version) there were no problems.

Now I have to reboot to the Apple firmware and then it'a all fine. But it's very annoying. :-/
Where is the fault?

Well, if that would be known it could get fixed ...

Btw, you don't need to reboot to AppleOS for disk mode -- you can simply use emergency disk mode. Rockbox itself reboots to Apples disk mode anyway (but not emergency disk mode, so that mode reboots after usb disconnect)

Okay, the emergency disk mode is nice... but what's the advantage? After usb disconnect I have to reboot manually, too. (the same way if I boot to AppleOS)

Very "funny" bug... :-[

cheers for all the help she loves it.

what I have to do to connect it is.

turn on > emidtiatly hold select and play / pause > we get a big tick on the screen saying it's say to disconnect > connect the usb lead.

when finished uploading tracks

disconnect lead > then when the tick reapears then hold down menu then select together.

I know it's not the correct way of connecting but it works.

i'd agree there must be a bug seeming you have to go through all those steps just to either charge and send files.  Small bug really considering all the other benifits of this FREE software tho.

my girlfriend would like to say thank you to all that have contributed to the rockbox project as it's enabled her to be able to use an Ipod due to her visual imparments.

regards
