odd problem with certain themes on 1st gen nano (garbled text)! help?!?

well, this is a very wierd problem
on some themes, including rockboxed and others, the text becomes garbled. unreadable and it looks like no font i have installed.
i already checked all of my fonts and theyre fine
fortuantely, my favorite theme (jclix) works perfectly
whats happening?

It says it requires a custom build. Are you running a modified build?
