I think that almost any distribution will compile rockbox well, it's up to personal preference. I use Ubuntu because it looks good, is pretty fast and is easy to use.

If you read it you don't need to wonder what distribution you need. You just download the one they have already setup for you!

Any distro will be able to compile rockbox.  Ubuntu or Kubuntu is the most desktop-oriented disrto out there.  If you want something a little more advanced you may want to check out Gentoo or Fedora Core.  Slackware is nice too, but is very advanced for beginning users.
