Mpeg Playing Issues
« on: May 09, 2007, 08:23:14 PM »
Hi I'm using an ipod nano right now. I can't get my mpegplayer to play anything above 10 fps. I've downloaded elephants dream just to test it and it doesn't play fast enough. I've also encoded my own videos. They sound will play fine but the video will lag behind. I tried frame skip and all that stuff and nothing works. I've read about Kernel On COP and I don't know if that has anything to do with getting my nano to play fast enough. Please tell me what I have to do and how I get KoCOP. I've searched forever and can't find anything. Thanks

how high resolution and bitrate are we talking? Did you look at the MPEG player page under extras, it gives you resolutions vs fps ratios in a table.

Those numbers are most likely out of date with recent MpegPlayer improvements, but should give a decent idea.
I should probably run the benchmarks again on my players, and add a SVN revision number to the table.

Yeah probably, I can get over 30fps on my H10 at 160x128.
There isnt much a point to put a video with a larger resolution that the LCD anyway.

Which bootloader are you using to start load Rockbox?   People using old versions of the ipodlinux Loader2 bootloader have reported the same problem.

The video is 250kbps and 176 by 128 at 25 fps. I am using Loader2 for ipodlinux but it's pretty new. It's version 2.5 beta i believe.

Your video sounds like it should play at full-speed (i.e. 25fps).

Try upgrading your bootloader to the latest version - either Loader2 or the Rockbox bootloader.  For Loader2, it needs to be a version newer than January 2007.

Re: Mpeg Playing Issues-Gigabeat

I am also having video playing issues with video created with WinFF under the Gigabeat 4:3 setting.

I play one video (small video clip) plays fine. After this video ends or I quit.

I play a 2nd video clip (shows first frame) and the player locks up and the led lights on the side light up. No buttons function and have to use the battery switch to turn the player off. On restarting I can now play the video.

I've an iPod Nano 4Gb, Loader 2 (latest version from 2 weeks ago) and a very recent build of Rockbox (a week ago). The player (when it plays) works perfect so far (tested +15 music videos/movie clips encoded with WinFF, 160 kbps video and 128 for audio) and no audio desync or video problem whatsoever.

But  I'm having the same problem as http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/6921
After doing a menu->quit from mpegplayer, not only a second execution of mpegplayer, but any app that uses audio will hang up the entire system. I think something wrong happens to the audio thread. Looking at debug mode options, it seems locked up as it was still playing someting.

Someone said a similar problem has some relation with an older version of Loader. To clarify, this problem is a (current) mpegplayer bug or it has something to do with (the latest version of) Loader 2 too?

Since I'm using very recent builds of everything I can't understand why the forementioned bug was marked as fixed a month ago. The bug persisted, I'm overlooking something or what?=P And how can I help to resolve this?

Thanks =)!

Please test with the official bootloader, and a current build. A week ago is not current, though in this case it should be current enough in regards to mpegplayer, you should never, ever refer to anything other than a build you've just downloaded from the current build page as new enough as updates to Rockbox happen multiple times per day and many of them can change relevant things. You're also using an unsupported bootloader which, depending on which exact version you mean (telling us it's 'from 2 weeks ago' doesn't tell us whether you downloaded it from somewhere, or built it directly from their SVN repository, but it's unsupported either way) the bootloader could be the problem since Mpegplayer depends on proper coprocessor function.

Thanks Llorean, My Rockbox version is r13368-070510. Looking at my loader installed, it is an official release version from 18 May 2006 http://www.ipodlinux.org/Loader2#top and not a newer SVN (as linuxstb recommends)

You make it clear that Loader 2 is "unsupported" by Rockbox, that's ok. But they claim to be able to load Rockbox, which is confusing for someone coming out from iPodLinux. Note that the newer "official" Loader 2 in binary form is 2.5 (the version I have installed and is giving me some problems). The official iPodLinux installer installs Loader 2.4, which is worse T_T.

This situation with iPodLinux seems to be an important caveat for newbies (like me xD)

Well It's my fault, I think I'll install the rockbox bootloader =)

Thanks again =)!

A loader from May '06 (either ours or theirs) almost certainly won't work with current iPod builds.

unless you use iPodLinux a lot, i would suggest that you use the Rockbox loader. I switched, and it's so much faster playback for me. I would not know much further knowledge than that.

I restored my iPod, downloaded ipodpatcher "ipodpatcher v0.9 with v1.0 bootloaders" from
http://download.rockbox.org/bootloader/ipod/ipodpatcher/linux32x86/ipodpatcher as it says in the manual.

Well, It works exactly the same as with the older mid/2006 Loader 2 o_0. It still hangs when I enter MpegPlayer or Recording mode, quit suddenly, and then try to play any sound (mp3, mpegplayer again, whathever).

tested with r13368-070510 and r13368-070515 (the most current build I can get without building it myself)

This is normal? .___.? I'm using the wrong ipodpatcher? :'(

Well, recording mode doesn't work well yet. When you leave it you need to restart before sound will work.

Mpegplayer should work though, I don't know what's going wrong.
