Extracing Rockbox in OS X
« on: May 09, 2007, 06:19:14 PM »
I recently discovered rockbox and was blown away.

Installation proved a little difficult although.
I downloaded the files for rockbox but when it tells me to extract rockbox to my ipod, I'm stuck. Stuffit extracts it to a folder and then deletes that folder. It also gives me no choice of destination. Must I try windows, or can it bwe done with OS X? Thank you.

you could either use another Zip programm,
or use rbutil for easy installing.

this Tool is not completly ready but it should work :-)

Running that on OSX required another proram of which none of the mirrors worked.

Any ideas on another zip program... or why stuffit doesn't work?

I think that happens because OSX doesn't show files with a . in the name.  Maybe try google.  Theres probably a way to fix that.

That or you could do it from the command line.

Or you could search the forums here. This has come up many times in the past - and I recall seeing at least one freebie utility mentioned here that fixed the "folders starting with '.' not showing in Finder".

In terminal enter this command:

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool YES  (this will show the hidden files)

restart the finder

make a temp. folder at the root level of iPod, extract rockbox there to make stuffit happy, then just drag it out to the root level and erase the temp folder

then in terminal: defaults delete com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles & restart finder (back to hiding files)
