Bootloader USB mode with cradle
« on: May 02, 2007, 06:51:56 PM »
I've noticed something like what you've described.  Using an official build, If I power my Gigabeat on with the USB plugged in, (Cradle or not) the player goes into Bootloader USB mode.  (With the white background and small black letters.)  If I'm plugged into the cradle, power down can only be done with the battery switch.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Using r13357, I'm not getting this.  I am still getting the Bootlooader USB mode if I power on with the USB cable connected though.  There's even a difference in this behavior where I used to have to flip the battery switch in order to shutdown.  Now it splashes the Rockbox w/Revision Info screen and then back to the Main Menu.  I can then continue use.

That's strange Nate, I just looked at the code of the bootloader and it uses the same usb_detect() function as rockbox itself. Are you sure you have the cradle switch set to "line-out"?

As for the shutting down problem, non of the developers have experienced it so far, so that makes it a bit harder to figure out what's wrong and fix it.

Markun: I have the cradle set to USB< vice >line out.  This also happens if I power on without the cradle connected to the USB cable alone.

Hi Nate, I moved you messages to another thread as it looked to me like you were talking about something not related to the shutdown problems.

All of what you describe looks normal behaviour of the new bootloader to me:

you should get to Bootloader USB mode with the USB cable connected or with the cradle, but only  when the switch is set to USB (not line-out).

Thanks Markun for the insight.

So let me get this straight.  Powering on with the USB cable connected or Cradle set to USB will boot into Bootloader USB mode.

Using the USB/Line Out switch as a sort of on/off mechanism for the USB connection on the cradle is ingenious.  This way the USB can always be connected to the cradle.  If you want to actually connect to the PC you just hit the switch.  When you're done just unmount/eject in your OS and flip the switch back to line out.  You never have to remove the USB cable.  You guys are great.

Thanks!
