Problems connecting the ipod to the pc and transferring songs etc.
SindreD:
I've been a happy Rockbox user for a while now, but recently I've been having problems connecting my Ipod Nano 1st generation to the computer.
I am being told (by the PC) the ipod is not formatted, and I therefore cannot transfer songs and other files, but the ipod is playing music perfectly without any problems at all. I've tried to connect it to some other PC's, but the problem is unfortunately the same.
Anybody got any idea what's wrong?
betamaxman:
Download a copy of knoppix, burn the iso (if you have nero, roxio or whatever burning app, right click the iso and in the properties tab select open with either nero, roxio, or whatever. Now simply double clicking an iso image will open your burn application and burn the iso properly). Boot into the cd/dvd (press whatever key your pc requires to enter setup (your bios) and set cd as the first boot device). Now with the knoppix linux desktop loaded, plug in your ipod and it will open or display an icon on the desktop you can open. You should be able to load/delete what you want to and from your ipod. Sorry forgot you will need to make the ipod writable first by right clicking on it , selecting actions and then "make read writable" then ok. point is if this works for you and you can copy to and from your ipod it will rule out there being anything wrong with your ipod and point at windows as being the culprit.
You might be able to copy your stuff off the ipod and reseting it in itunes and redoing rockbox after you recopy everything. Another option might be in windows again go to my computer, right click on your ipod icon, select properties, tools and then error checking, check the boxes for fixing errors etc then ok. Might be something is currupted and error checking should fix it. 8-)

Try putting the ipod in Disk Mode before connecting it to the computer.

I'm having the same problem with 60GB Color/Photo. The iPod plays fine, but shows up as "not formatted" on two of my PCs. Windows Explorer/My Computer takes forever to try to open the thing before asking to format it.
I've tried both the original firmware mode and the rockbox (julius build) mode in both active and disk modes to no avail. If I could simply get my songs off, I'd do a fresh reinstall.
I've posted this in the appropriate julius forum originally, but am posting it here as well because it may not be at the fault of that particular build. Sorry if this isn't allowed.
UPDATE - I just installed iTunes and it shows up as a corrupted iPod. My only recourse, alas, seems to be a reformatting (unless I'm content never adding/deleting songs again). Dammit.
Chronon:
Well, I would agree that a good option is a Knoppix Live CD. You should be able to get it to mount as a UMS device and get access to your files that way.
