Understanding mpegplayer "Show FPS"
« on: May 04, 2007, 06:43:52 PM »
Im trying to better understand the Show FPS output iin the mpegplayer plugin.
Quote
Show FPS (default: off)

This option displays (once a second - if your video is full-screen this means it will get overwritten by the video and appear to flash once per second) the average number of frames decoded per second, the total number of frames skipped (see the Skip Frames option), the current time (in 100Hz ticks) and the time the current frame is due to be displayed.

after reading this I expected 4 values to be displayed in the plugin, But I only see 3.
Something like
Quote
29.9 7 40
Im wondering what each number stands for.
Could someone also expound on
Quote
the current time (in 100Hz ticks) and the time the current frame is due to be displayed.
Im not really clear on what those 2 things actually mean.
Thanks for any help with this, Im just wanting to learn how to encode videos in the best way.

The time display, as the entry says, isn't displayed yet, but will be soon. Don't worry about it.

Hi,
i'm not sure, but i had the impression, that the last number shows the number of frames since the last keyframe.
The description in the wiki is propably not up to date.

That makes sense, that value increases then starts over,
I've encoded the same video with mencoder, VLC and  mediacoder, and the last value max-ed out around 30, 60, 230 (respectively) can anything valuable be determined by this?
Im wondering if there is any significance to this at this point or do keyframes come into play when using FF and REW?
 thanks again

Yes, you need them to do FF and REW.
They also have some influence on quality and filesize.
