« on: May 03, 2007, 05:26:20 PM »
what part of rockbox is based off linux/ipod linux? is the bootloader based off a hacked ipod linux bootloader? or whats the connection there?

(forgive me if i've missed reading this somewhere)

The reverse engineered info from the IpodLinux project was used to write rockbox drivers.  I don't think any of their code was, though maybe a bit was somewhere.

ok story time:

my battery was low to the point of the nano shutting off seconds after loading rockbox, so i shut rockbox down and put on the hold switch, and stuck it in my pocket. While walking to my car i slipped the hold switch to off in my pocket and pushed some of the buttons on it. then i thought "oop, thats going to turn it on" so i took it back out to turn it off again and on the screen was a different loading screen than the normal rockbox one. it said soemthing about linux loader and loading linux, but files not found.. im sorry i cant be more discriptive because after hanging there for a few seconds the battery ran out again and it shut off. I didnt have the time to get my camera out or really memorize anything.

so thats the source of my curiosity, i saw a screen that i have never seen before referencing linux. I have never even TRIED to install ipod linux on my nano so it either came from rockbox/its bootloader, or it came from the apple firmware.

and thus far i havent been able to reproduce the screen. :(

the rockbox loader can start ipodlinux, if you press the right button(s) (I don't remember which) If you do this it will say something like "starting linux" and since you say you don't have linux installed it will error out with "file not found"

If you hold PLAY whilst booting, the Rockbox bootloader looks for a file called linux.bin in the root of your FAT32 partition.

I'm booting IPL that way ... you just need to grab the latest kernel from IPL (and of course also install the IPL userland)

This is starting to get pretty far afield from Rockbox...

not really since we would be using rockbox to load linux..

anyhow, it seems like i would need an ext2 or HFS partition for linux, and with the limit of 4 gigs (and much less actual free space) its not something im going to get into.

No, you would be using the rockbox bootloader to load linux.

But anyway, if the mods don't care neither do I.

all im saying is- we dont support loading rockbox with the ipod linux loader, because its an IPL software. so I doubt the people at IPL are going to want to support linux loaded with rockbox's loader. seems like this fits as a general discussion for rockbox.

but like you say, its up to the mods. and im done with it anyways since i wont be partitioning
